I consider myself somewhat of a mechanical expert. I work with massive mining machinery all day as well as rehab AgriMechs. (John Deere’s)
So climbing 5 to 8 meters to fix these machines and move them about I sort of understand the weights and mass involved in moving these machines faster than 40kmh.
I also consider myself a Battletech and Mechwarrior expert. I have played the Battletech board game first, then the original Mechawarrior. (in glorious cga graphics)
I also became a Robotech fan after seeing the unseen. The Wasp, Warhammer, Rifleman, Archer and Crusader (and the rest) in action. I then learnt it was based on a brilliant anime show Macross.
Now I am not going to get into the whole Harmony Gold debacle. (As it has been discussed to death for the last 12 years in various forms.) But the way I see Mechwarrior online and the way mechs move is similar to these massive machines I work with.
I don’t see in this rebooted universe mecha having high energy conversion armour or reflex weaponry or the agility to turn on a dime transform to a jet in 2 seconds while blasting 200 missiles down with a gun pod.
What I want to see is a similar slower paced mecha game similar to Chromehounds (RIP) which for me personally was Mechwarriior online. (Until Sega shut down the server, boo hoo)
I see a certain pace and role for every mech. E.g. Archer is long range support, Phoenix and Shadow Hawk, with the Griffin did the fighting. Warhammer would be the firepower with the Wasp scouting ahead.
And that was the beauty of battletech. You would trade of speed and agility for Armour and firepower. It was balanced and fair. It was true Mech Chess warfare.
I remember a good friend of mine having a lance each of one Assault, Heavy, Medium, and Light mech. In the last phase of combat it came down to his Atlas and my Stinger. Due to having better strategy and positioning plus a few more 12 die rollsJ. So I kept my Stinger away moving as many hexes at running speed away from his atlas and I rolled a 2(CT critical). l and then rolled a 12 (3 critical chances) disabling the atlas’s engine. I couldn’t believe it and neither could he. It was one of those games that you never forgot because the total underdog stole the victory by using the mechs speed asset against the atlas. (It did help that his Atlas pilot had a gunnery skill of 5).
Now I saw the pilot of the Jenner take the atlas head on and get blasted away at point blank range because he used that mech the wrong way. A Jenner should be hit and run style combat, not face to face. (Especially with a Hundred tonner). But that is good. It makes me think that this game will be hard but fair.
So I am with you Mechwarrior devs. Stack the limitations. Make the game a thinking person’s combat game. Make people conserve ammo. Make the lasers really overheat your mech. Make players think about their next move, work together as a team to fulfil an objective. Make us count the seconds for weapons recycle. Most importantly;
DON’T BRING CLAN TECH IN.
This ruined the whole balance of mechwarrior and battletech. Suddenly Heavy mechs kept pace with Medium mechs. MechWarrior Mercs with mektek you can put three UAC20 on a daishi frame and blast everything to bits in seconds. Targeting computer combined with Pulse Lasers you might as well be playing Armored Core.
So please make MWO more like ChromeHounds. A proper team game where there is a purpose and function for each piece of machinery. Otherwise it will just be another run and gun FPS mech game like Armored Core, Virtual on, A.C.E., Robotech Battlecry, MW4 with mektek , War World, etc

What I am hoping Mechwarrior online will be.

Don't forget the silliness of customization for each game. 'Mechs should be customized as the player wants, and over time, and with expense, and then we wouldn't need hard points. Players should have to think about how in the world to best utilize their 'Mechs in various environments, rather than being allowed to customize each round, as they wish.

HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAAA Clan Tech is coming bro! PGI will get more grief and lose more paid (read important) players if they withhold clan tech. Clan tech doesn't 100% guarantee a victory. You should know this from tabletop. Clan tech causes you to change your strategy and modify your load outs. Don't forget, down the road from clan tech is improved IS tech too. Don't hOld the game back because you are scared.

No tactics, are the tactics of the dead. The IS proved that tactics can defeat a stronger oppenent and we will have the chance to prove them right.

lol clan tech made everything all messed up. there was no scripted fighting anymore, but it was fun, so i wouldnt mind that, i agree it shouldbe tactical. i mean from day one they keep saying they want to make it a team based game. being a rambo is gonna get your *** killed.

To be brave, one must first be scared.
And your right about clan or advanced IS Tech changing everything. I would simply have to power game and max out double heat sinks and fill the chassis with medium pulse lasers. Then guess what everyone else would too. Why bother having an Atlas, Hunchback or any other mechs with a role, when you could have a generic chassis 1 design. You would not worry about ammo explosions or running out of ammo. Suddenly your not playing battletech but a hybrid Macross A.C.E. ******* hybrid.
And if I want that type of game I would play Armored Core and use the over powered Kawasa Laser. (same principal)
Maybe it can be introduced later as a stand alone add on for those that want it. But as I said before for me personally, I want to work in a team environment with a certain role. Maybe I like living in the past, maybe the people who like the new tech just want an easier ride. I hope those people will realise that a rewarding game is hard, but fair. Dark Souls is one of those games and if you have played it you will know what I mean.
