I've see posting about people listing 24 medium lasers as thier favorite weapon, i've done that stuff too with the small and the ER Lg lasers as well (not 24 but as many as i could fit on the mech).

are variants going to be fixed to prevent some people even myself from just through lots of the same weapons on the mech. LoL had lots of fun in a warhawk with 5 er lg lasers :)

Don't get me wrong i like fixed variants or fixed hard points for weapon types as well

That's usually more of a trouble with mechs with Omni hardpoints, but I'm sure we'll see our share of laser boats. The Catapult variant that mounts the PPC's in lieu of LRMS I'm sure can probably carry fourteen medium lasers. Heck, look at the screenshot of the day, that hunchback has what, 8 or 10 medium lasers?

I don't laser boat, but I tend to use all non ammo weapons. I love me some PPCs.

the real questions are

(A) how available are double heat sink remods

and

(:) how important is long range going to be in the actual play of the game

Guess by looking at the screenshot of the week that the hunchback had nothing my lasers, so i guess we will see a lot of that out there then.

First off: you can only mount as many lasers as a 'Mech has beam hardpoints. The "Swayback" in the screenshot has at least nine of those; I'd be surprised if they gave it any more.

Secondly: nine medium lasers is the effective maximum. Any more than that, and your 'Mech would overheat and shut down every time you pulled the trigger.

With 24, your 'Mech would redline and explode.

Read up on how the mechlab is going to work. In short, there will be a limited number of hardpoints in a given location - your mech will be able to mount 4 lasers instead of 4 PPCs, but not 5 if there's no 5th energy hardpoint.
We don't know how it will work with omnimechs yet - you might be able to replace LRM launcher on a Warhawk with the 5th laser.

I ask a few simple questions. Whats wrong with "boating"? Whats wrong with making the best config for the intended role it will play? just because its a "Boat" does not make it best. Tactics when in the end.

The mechlab system only allows "so many" of a weapon into a hardpoint

The thing that's wrong is that the battles become less based on skill and managing your weapons and more about getting one shot that is guarantied to hit.
Think about it- Let's say you boat your way through battles and all of these battles are short affairs were everybody boats. No really memorable battles.
Just a bunch of killshots.
Energy boats tend to go slow once they fire off the first salvo since they overheat. This promotes slowmoving battles.
Everybody standing still after they fire the first alphastrike.
Another thing with boats is that it promotes camping more since a lot of players want to hide in one place till somebody wanders into their ambush.
What's fun in camping through half the match?

A balanced mech configuration makes the players more like fencers who makes the most out of their mechs through their skill and carefull weapon selection that doesn't overheat and yet doesn't rely fully on ammunition dependant weaponry.

There's nothing wrong with boating, anything/anyone that can min/max the system will be shifted to by any group that can do math and ratios.

Also remember that Lasers are now a channeled effect. They deliver their damage over a short period of time (1.5 secs I believe). Unless you have a steady hand you probably won't be delivering the full onslaught of your build. Two targeting reticles will also decrease the value of boats.

But hey, if you don't like ammo, go for it.

Laser boats are brilliant! You just shoot the lasers at the water to move, and you do a couple of circles so you can scoop up the fishies.

I am guilty of lazer boats :D

Not as a normal play style, more of a "My boss was a total dick today and HEY LOOK A WATER MAP". I become a literal boat using rivers and bridges to flash cool the melting mech. :)

There is 'effective' ranges in the game but yeah you can hit beyond this as far as has been said.

I just hope Double sinks take up the 3X space and ofc 2x for clan ones.

howver the new screenshot 8 is a little disheartening

I ask you Speenslitta? Have you ever tried to excell? "Boats" are a viable config, but they are not the end game.

Personally i prefer sharks with frickin' laser beams on their heads. Every animal deserves a warm meal afterall.

But seriously, boats will be limited based off their ability to dissipate heat.

Heat looks to be playing a HUGE factor in this game. And there has been no confirmation of double heat sinks...
