Just to be sure, because my searching hasn't yielded a direct answer, but when the Skill Tree drops we won't need to buy three variants of a mech anymore to "master" it (or whatever the new equivalent will be), correct?

Correct. I believe there's even a Twitter post from Russ confirming that.
