mechwarrioronline.com seems free
some variant or .org or .net would have been preferable to mercs imo, but who knows what the story is

if you look at the MWO references in facebook, twitter and the internet in general you will find lots of references to MWO so I am guessing that they were looking for something that worked well across all the social networks as well as the internet domain, just my 2 C-bills (guessing)

Btw, .org wouldn't work. There are restrictions on the use of the .org top level domain that would prohibit a for profit corporation from using it. .net might also have restrictions that would prohibit it's use. Your average user* would also get confused, they are used to .com top level domains. Additionaly something like mechwarrioronline.com is just too long for your average user* to want to have to type in.

Maybe it's tied into the "old" reboot of MechWarrior that PGI was originally going to do, that has since been cancelled and turned into MWO?

Perhaps the original intent was for us all to be mercenaries like in MW4: Mercs. The intent shifted, but the infrastructure was already set for the domain name.
