Have the system requirements increased recently? I haven't upgraded my laptop for a couple of years and I'm finding increasing issues with framerates. Particularly in brawls, I'm finding my aiming is really affected when things get busy. Has anyone else notices this in the last 3 months?

Not me personaly with that recent issue but you are not alone with that issue.
I was hit 1,5 years ago and basicaly stoped playing faction warfare in summer 2015 because of a similar issue.
After a patch I have until now 20fps less on FP matches than in QP.

Well such things happen in this game.

Last patch that introduced those markers over players their mechs really hit some players hard in the fps department. You can test it in game by disabling your HUD (Shift+F11??) and checking how the fps (seen by hitting F9) change.

In addition the updating of old maps and introducing things like breakable trees and lampposts has also increased the strain for computers (especially if you were in the danger zone already) and some maps like Mining Collective can hit a potato laptop hard because of the Lighting used in that map (I can know, 6 months ago I was still playing on such a laptop).

I've also started seeing reduced fps... Really just noticed it after the 1/24 patch. Hoping it will improve.

I run on a Precision 4800 w/ i7 4610M & FirePro M5100 since I switched from WOT a little less than a year ago.

It's never been perfect (not made for gaming), but it did the job. Now I get 30 fps max on medium, 20-ish when it gets busy. Low isn't much better and sucks too much to bother with.

If you're an expert, I'm open to opinions and suggestions.

It's been a huge different in FPS when toggling off the HUD, not just after the mentioned patch.
One thing that may help is turning flash's hardware acceleration off.

How do you turn flash's hardware acceleration off?

Older than 3 months, but they upgraded the texture quality on all mechs to be universal.

Could be that an update, repair, or some such has reset your graphic settings to something higher than you would normally be using.

Recent upgrades to the game have put my system behind the power curve, too - I play on a once-good, but now aging desktop, and I had to reduce my settings to control framerate skips. Sadness. I shall have to upgrade Soon.tm

I cannot tell if an enemy mech is faced my way or is faced away from me.

Whatever....

Laptop.

Can of compressed air, blow out the heatsinks. Depending on laptop a few have accessibility to the HS.
Set Power Options to High Performance.

Add a user.cfg with line sys_MaxFPS = 30 (adjust to liking) This keeps the CPU from turbo boosting too often, when sends more power to fewer and fewer cores, increasing heat output which can cause the system to underclock itself to allowing cooling off.
