These screenshots were taken from the same spots, one at max graphics and lowest graphics, illustrating the worst visibility gets on their respective settings.

As you can see this is a pretty massive difference and a pretty big advantage gained on low settings. I upgraded my PC a while ago to play MWO and enjoy the visuals of an immersive battlefield. I can't help it I'm a very visual person. But at times it feels like punishment as it becomes hard to see anything as vision is literally blocked a lot of the time and for longer periods of time. All the redone maps with fog are just as bad. Add too that the multitude of invisible walls...

*Edit* Throwing in 1 more from Forest Colony. This map generally gives me a hard time at dawn and dusk where there is a fog in the air. Night vision is too bright and thermal limits view distance. Notice the difference in lighting between max and min settings.

I had my settings almost maxed one year ago.

Now they are at the lowest level except textures and particles. Now I CAN SEE...

Low settings has always given a competitive advantage in pvp games.

Quake 3 for example:

You can also do this in MWO with the lod bias mod.

Has a high tier player comes in yet and said something along the lines of:

"Low settings provide a clear advantage. If you're not play the game on the lowest settings you are hurting the team. Cool graphics and immersive enviornments are for losers. Git gud scrub, and lower your graphics settings"

or am I early?

It greatly annoys me that this is a thing still in 2017. There's no point on your fancy graphics in PvP multiplayer game if you can turn all the bushes and weather effects off giving insane advantage for guys turning their graphic settings down.

And you can can make fog or bushes which take less resources but look uglier and block as much for not so good computers, so don't dare to use it as an excuse when making games.

I don't suppose that results in better performance does it? Seems like it just affects the textures, so it would help on memory usage, but no framerate... ?

You only have an advantage against people maxing it out for immersion.

Many competitive minded players will minimize settings that interfere with performance and are also often running that on good PCs.

It's going to be a combination of:

CPU
Resolution
GPU

Probably in that order.

When I went from my ancient CPU to my new I7-6700 in Sept, I had an enormous leap in performance on a 24" wide screen monitor (1900x1200) with even a low end GPU (GTX 950).

I was getting 100+ FPS

Then I added my new monitor which is a 34" ultra wide at 3440x1440 and my FPS dropped considerably - all the way down to 30~40 FPS.

Then I upgraded my GPU in November (I was waiting on step up program from the 950) to a GTX 1070, I jumped back up to 90-100 FPS in most situations.

That being said, I turn Environmental down because it adds a lot of visual impairment - so YMMV.

Sorry, no benefits to framerate. The detail of the textures is still there but gets blurred by a driver setting. I'm not aware of any way to improve framerates besides going full potato in your video settings.

Thinkpad T530. Got it on a budget where I expected it to last me a good 7-8 years before needing to upgrade. Didn't expect to get interested in any games more intensive than League of Legends... but then I discovered MWO and here I am plodding along with it begrudgingly. I'll be able to afford to upgrade or build a desktop by the time Star Citizen is ready for full release.

I can relate. I started playing MWO on a 2009 spec sony vaio with ATI mobility 4650 and core 2 CPU. Good old days of 720p low settings.
Played on that potato for 2 years before I decided to upgrade to an MSI gaming laptop back in 2014.

Things are good. For now.

Well, there's some questionable levels of expectations in there.

Surely you'll be able to save up for a new PC by the year 2025.

Anyway, I'm not sure what you mean by upgrade but you should most definitely build a desktop if you're going to continue playing a wide variety of games - once you have the budget for it of course.

HORY SHEET. I am going to turn my settings down tonight then. Frozen maps do my head in but Forest as well?

This is by far the newest META. I might even have to make another thread about it.

And here was me suffering away on 35-40FPS on most maps, sometimes less - sometimes more.

When Star Citizen is released? Is that like the new "When the Cubs Win the World Series?"

Wow, that's a huge difference. I'm going to find the setting that removes those particles next time I play. I usually find I hate forest colony because I can never reliably see anything, now I could just see everything all the time *and* have higher FPS.

That's great.

Alternatively, PGI could add low quality fog for the low settings or just stop adding fog everywhere only when you're on high.

I hear the requirements for SC will be volumes higher than MWO, potato computers are not going to enjoy it.
