Greetings fellow Mechwarriors!

I just wanted to gather some views/opinions the tier system and "playing for fun".

I feel that the tier system rates me way too high for example. Sometimes I play good meta builds/mechs and that shows in the stats, but often I play "selftrolling" mechs like Mr. Streakcat or 8 LB2X Dire Wolf.

I also love my Wang or crap Awesome builds just because I like Awesomes. Its just for "fun" so to say, a kind of "selftrolling". The tier system begins makes me think about this in a strange way.

---

IF I play a challange/troll mech, I potentially hurt my team. Most people like to win, so IF I decide to challange myself with a crap build, I might anger other players with it. Am I way overthinking this?

Thank you for your input!

EDIT: See it that way: If this was a MOBA like say LOL and my team would need a specific character to win and I have more fun playing an other character nad pick it, the outrage is great... but this is an arcade arena shooter.

The 8 LB2X DWF is actually a blast, and at one point the streakcat was very meta. Let's see... three S-SRM6s is the max you can fit, there's no ghost heat, it has masc and jump jets... and the missiles will track down if you lock and jump bringing an entirely new fun to pop-tarting. I ran my UltraViolence with 8 LB2s for a few games... 2 alternating groups of 4, cooldown and range modules... so... 8 damage, at 990 meters, every third of a second, for 2.4 heat.

You could always just make an Alt account that stays in low tiers

Just play in group queue with folks that don't care what you run. In the FRR hub, 1stH, LOR, and SO (I am sure there are others), are all populated with folks who generally don't give a damn what you run in (QP at least). Some individuals might give you some grief for a truly spectacular trollish/bad build (like griefing Shiro when running an 8 flammer build for example), but a little ribbing is part of why you run a troll build. As to general solo QP, yes, you're over thinking this. Run what you want.

Play with what ever you like, any mech can help with a win.

I don't think a dire wolf with one machine gun (and absolutely nothing else) counts.

You are waaaay overthinking this. Most people in T1 don't belong there anyways, MM already mixes up 4s with 1s and so on, so go ahead and troll away :D

Or if you REALLLY wana troll take an non-Artemis LRM Catapult with one Flamer as a backup. People will HATE you Posted Image

And there's always the "Assault mech on Heavy (or Medium!!)" loadout with only 2 points armor on everything. They assume you have XL engine but....armor? Naaaah Posted Image

I mean, this is the reason they're called troll builds, you're kinda trolling yourself and your team by lowering your chances of winning by bringing a mech with lower capabilities. The thing is that most people aren't as hardcore into winning as in MOBAs or CSGO or other games with a matchmaker system that actually works decently in practice and is more fluid so that people can go up and down more per win or loss. So basically people just don't care in this game, the people who are there to carry are just going to be carrying sacks of potatoes anyway along with any troll builds and in this game a great player in a troll build is still better than a bad player running the meta as long as the troll build isn't so bad to the point that its like an all flamer Dire Wolf or something equally useless.

To be honest, as long as you're in the top 6 players during the match no one is going to really complain about your performance much. You could even LRM boat, but if you kill half the enemy team, get 1000+ damage, and show that you actually know how to brawl and get in there in a fight instead of acting like a potato people will even congratulate you.

I play troll builds at least a third of the time (faction play excluded) and I haven't noticed much of an effect on my tier. Half the fun of this game for me is dropping in new/ridiculous builds.

Got cooked by a Hunchback with only six flamers a couple of days ago. It gave me a good laugh.

Well, I'd say, as long as you don't bring a real troll build (MG/FLamer only, for example), go for it as long as it works for you.
The meta builds didn't just pop out of nowhere either. And as good as these builds might work for some, they might be complete crap for others.

As long as you can carry your weight and contribute enough, I'd have no problem with whatever mech or loadout you bring.
After all, trying different builds and playing around in mechlab is part of the fun.

Yeah, bringing the equivalent of putting a LOLTraktor into a high tier match in World of Tanks is not good. That's trolling your own team by being useless and increasing the odds of a loss. Unwelcome in any online game and bannable in some.

If you have something that irritates the other team or is an odd but plausible idea, go for it. Most of the content in MWO is 'Mech building and testing.

As far as "meta" - eh. The thing with meta (when it's not driven by something that is blatantly OP) is that it is making assumptions both ways i.e. this is a good idea so long as everyone thinks it is a good idea. But if people are picking meta-recommended equipment without understanding why it is recommended or most of the teams are running lore or oddball builds anyway with random maps...

As the whole PSR system us a broken and upwardly biased rating system, what you run is not an issue... until we change the system, it does not stand as much more than a "time played" bar.

Your personal stats are affected too much by others efforts and lack thereof... you pull a 900 point game with 4 kills and your team pulls an epic fail, your average match score is penalized by the loss... so it is not reflecting accurately your skills used during the round. As this score (in this example) is impacted by other players, it is not your real score. The reverse is also true for underperformers being carried to a win.
How about that guy in the "Iron Dome" Kit Fox that hit the OpFor for 120 points damage but stopped 90% of the incoming missiles? Think his help was worth the 100 match points he will get? Helps the team but kills his average to run it... not much real incentive to be the "Iron Dome" if you are concerned with a KDR or damage average, but a real contribution for the team.

So, if I feel like running an absolutely goofy build, I go for it! (Exception: faction play, be a team member, no 9 flamer dire wolf)

I don't really care what the current meta is, I know what missiles or guns I am good with. I know how fast I want to go.
This is my stress release. Sometimes I play for fun, 2 year-old kid on my lap saying "pew pew" while I shoot you, other times I want that win like my paycheck is attached to it. It isn't up to someone else to tell me which way to play, but I will be glad to tell you if I am in a PFF or PTW mode.

On an average night, I hop in and run my "compulsory" 2x rounds and after that I might hit the mechlab for some fun. Current heavy build long range and long recycle time metas that are leading to long range standoff matches have made for some fun times with small fast and close range experimental builds. Think about a 130kph ac20.

Tier rating is not a friend of the experimental tinkerer. If you like stats, don't tinker and run fun builds. My stats would look much better if I quit tinkering with fun builds... but like I said, PSR is broken, tier rating is not a true reflection... so you may as well have fun with it.

Bottom line, it is your time investment, your computer and your internet bill. Nobody else is paying it for you, nobody gets to tell you how to have fun... not in a quick play pickup group. If you are on a comp team, heck yes, get with the program and play your role.

People getting in a quick play match and expecting a comp level experience are just upset due to unsatisfied high expectations.

Play your game.

Yes, you are wayyyyyyy overthinking this. What's the point of playing if you're not playing for fun? As long as you are not in violation of the CoC --- and dropping with "fun" or "joke" builds is not a violation --- then you are fine.

Oh! And I play with a joystick. Bite me! Posted Image

In solo QP as long as you can actually be effective and put up decent numbers, no one really cares what the hell you brought.

300-500 damage, depending on weight class, and you're fine.

In group QP, yeah you are gimping the team and its likely more pronounced. The stomps will be harder and faster the better the teams you face, and it will only be worse if you've brought a handful of joke builds.

Drive what you want. If your on a dedicated team I would think that's a different story but that's between you and the team.

People take the team thing way to far. You paid to play the game the way you want to so you have every right to play like you want within the rules. There is no rule about what you have to drive. I would sure like to see it if there was.

Ignore the Power Rangers and have fun.

The fact that you made this thread right when I'm making evil plans of "Stick AC/2's on everything that can have AC/2's" is worrying to me. Are you spying on me?
