I play at the moment maybe once a week. I have around 100 Mechs I think.
I don't play with modules and as such I am sure I don't have a lot.
I played to master a mech and then moved on. So I don't have many mechs with lots of XP.
The previous "skill tree" was terrible more of a bucket than a tree and to be reasonable in a mech it really had to be mastered because the jump in performance was nuts.
So we have the new skill tree. it will cost 9.1 million c-bills and 136,500 XP. That's a lot.
Yep no way I am going to master all my mechs in any reasonable time frame.
But then again I don't have too.
Lets be honest if you've got 100's of mechs you aren't playing them all. You picked up variants to master some other mech and haven't touched it since.
The new skill tree seems to allow some meaningful choices (I might say that it is a bit too generous. Perhaps reduce the SP to 50 or something to make a real limit). This is a massive improvement. This in and of its self is worth the price in c-bills and XP.
It also makes playing & customising a Mech deeper and more meaningful. hopefully.
So what I am likely to do is play the mechs I like to start of with, maybe sell some variants to reduce the garage (I am looking at you omni-mechs).
Then when my money has been used I will play mechs and mess with the loadouts whilst I level them. I hope it will no longer be simply I have to get X amount of XP to master and move on. I hope the new skill tree will make me more attached to the Mechs.
So cost could be a problem but I think it is a price worth paying to have a better system.
Hell if PGI wanted to they could charge MC to buy skill points without XP or c-bills. That would raise money and be no skin off my nose. you want to master a light instantly $5, medium $10, Heavy $15 and assault $20. PGi after all will be losing money on the purchase of mech bays with the new skill tree.
As to quirks and balance. This is a radical new system (for the game) balance will be a problem to start with. However I hope they make progressive changes (as who can know where things end up with the change).
New ways to balance:
number of skill points
cost in c-bills of SP
cost in Xp of SP
cost of respec.
So as a filthy casual I am extremely relaxed about the cost of the new skill tree. Because I am not going to be mastering all my mechs. I can now happily sell off some of my mechs. As for the rest I hope to have a better relationship with them.
