How about removeing the weapons skill trees all together and have weapons with different characteristics?
Like my Luxor-D LBX has less spread but a shorter range or
the Armstrong U/AC dosn't jam that often but has less ammo....stuff like that.
People can boat effectifly but also people who like diversity can now also use their weapons with the same effectiveness as a boater...is that even a word?
It also would give a new player / new bought mech the option to be effective...as long as you have the CBills to buy the equipment...from the start, instead of the frustrating grind.
If you have to grind, it should be at least a bit of fun grinding.
I can also imagne that its vrey interesting to slowly outfit your mech this way. Forming it to the complex weapon system you want it to be. Going much more deeply into your favorit playstyle.
Beside that, give more build options to the player, removing a lot of skills, by adding more equipment like sensors, activators and basicly all the other equipment of a mech.
You want longer sensor range? You should by our new "Angst Clear View 2A" Sensor System.
You want your arms to move faster? We have the activator you seek !
You want better heatsinks? We got this fine new heatsinks...they also let you glow in the dark.
I guess that would make most if not all the skill stuff useless
The rest can be transfered to a "Pilot skill tree"
Fixed Skills of your pilot like "Awareness" or "favorite weapon". "fast reaction"...stuff like that.
They will allways be there. Changeing your mech dosn't mean that you forget how to pilot it.
