If the payouts are upped a bit in C Bills, and the "functions" (they are not really skills) cost C Bills rather than XP then that removes something that is tracked and worried about. You can spend your C Bills with a growing stable of mechs or to customize the functions on the one(s) you have.
Respecing becomes paying to erase a node (you might only need to go back a little and change direction so why respect an entire tree)
The no time but plenty of real cash crowd can MC to C Bill their way to high end mechs (which is cash flow for PGI). The time but no cash crowd will get there eventually.
Not pay to win, but possible to pay for best equipment early.

Mostly because it'd be incredibly difficult to change the system now and not screw long term players, or conversely overly benefit them.

I was thinking "why do we need a skill tree at all." It takes plenty of time to earn a Mech, and C-Bills contribute towards consumables and new Mechs. Can't the build stand for it's own?
