Hi guys,
Been playing since beta. I have a very love-hate relationship with this game. I've seen it go through a lot of changes, and sometimes I do end up coming back to it to play a bit.
I like the idea of a skill tree. This adds a bit of diversity to builds, and manages to knock down some power creep from certain clan mechs and is supposed to help discourage a meta. Meta's are bad, because it requires that you either need to nerf things into the ground, or find a way to bring the level up of everything else around it.
I've seen over the last few days a lot of gripe about cost. From a casual perspective, this hurts me a lot! And by a lot, I mean it makes me not want to play anymore! The purpose of having reduced costs is to close the gap between competitive, and casual players alike. Making everything obtainable (through a little bit of work of course). However, in it's current state for those people who have tons of mechs, and even those who don't will suffer the most as far as min-maxing goes. In this scenario, it becomes more of a pay to win scenario. This right here, is what causes a power creep and a meta.
This would be completely different if pilots who played had to obtain a level to unlock general XP to invest into talent/skill points to help aid in this. The reason why this model doesn't sit right with people, is because it's very pay to win. Not everyone can get all 91 points, unless you have the funds or if you play at least 8 hours a day, or if you have premium mechs/premium time.
League of Legends has the right idea for their skill tree/talents, and even rune modification system. It is obtainable by everyone, and has some talents with multiple levels to have a good trade-offs. Offensive/Defensive/Utility trees. These trees need to be simplified to smaller bonuses. Have a primary tree, and 2 secondary trees with very little investment. Because of this model, there is no way for anyone to really have a leg up on anyone else, because the only things you pay for are the heroes/champions themselves, and cosmetics.
As it stands, I do not like where this tree has headed or really provided. It's discouraging me from playing or even wanting to farm, because of investment.
Thanks for reading my little insight from a very casual player.
