Currently, players can sell mechs to free up mechbays. At a later date, they can repurchase the sold mech and the skills and xp they had previously is retained. Under the new skill trees, all SP and mech XP is lost when the mech is sold. This creates a steep penalty for selling mechs.
Could we get a "mothball" or other type of option? Where it's similar to selling, but you don't get any c-bills from mothballing a mech, just the freed up mechbay. If you want to unmothball a mech, you need an open mechbay and pay a C-bill or MC fee. The SP and XP are retained, and the user has to pay for the service.

Selling Mechs To Free Up Mechbays No Longer Viable

I've seen this rule severyl times here on the forums:
Never sell anything.
How often do you sell mechs? How often does the average player sell a mech...and then rebuy it?
Don't forget that each change equals some dollar costs for PGI, which in turn they would like to get back from us customers. Do you really need that feature?
(Well, if you and enough others say "yes", go ahead
)

I wouldn’t mind the mothball idea. But there is already very little reason left for selling Mechs or even buying Mechbays (after you have an initial number), with the rule of 3 gone and a prolonged grind per Mech.
PGI would hardly sell a single Mechbay if you could mothball your Mechs this way in addition.

give us a boneyard.. mechs can be shipped off to the boneyard and retain their current condition and skills spent for a price and and possibly a delay timer to prevent over use hot swapping them out.. after all pulling something out of a decommissioned state is not easy or quick..

I sell Mechs all the time... I Master all the variants of the Chassis then sell what I do not want. I have like +220 mechs Mastered with only 147 mechbays

I will admit that I had not thought of this but usually the mechs I have sold have been totally redundant when compared to their other variants.

If thats the case, it might be a bug, or maybe not considered yet.
Current option should work: convert XP to GXP (cost MC)
Optional new solution: Selling the mech will move all XP to HXP, but that would allow to transfer the XP of a mech variant to another same variant by selling one and then having all that HXP for free.
Note: this does not affect currently available HXP, as this is already in the HXP pool of all your current mechs and would only affect XP you collect on multiple variants in the future.

I would think if you sold off a mech variant, you should be refunded its SP that belong to that variant, so that if you buy it back later (or happen to have a 2nd copy of that same variant already) you can spend it there.
In that case it makes sense you get back the SP without respec cost because you already took the hit of 50% of the mech purchase price on selling it.
