Machineguns have been seriously buffed in the latest patch so people are actually retooling it back to 6 MG 2 LPL again (I used to run it 3 LPL), it just tears through components. Great mech with the way machineguns are atm!

My advice:
First only buy Hero's for MC when they're on sale.
Second, premium time will net you better income. It frees you up to play whatever you want rather than being stuck in one chassis.
Third - the standalone mech packs are good deals, as they come with some premium. From the list you provided, the Warhammer or either Clan pack would do you well. Good hero plus 3 good chassis to go with them.

I would strongly recommend Hankyu - Arctic Cheetah Prime (I). Not to expensive.
This 30 tons clan omni mech is very versatile and flexible in his build options. It's my most played mech and a really good cash cow.
Jump jets, ECM, 6 small lasers or 4 med ER lasers nice to play. Learn to manage heat and you will be fine.

the Arctic Cheetah Prime (I) from the bottom tier of the Clan Wave III Pack is $30 for 3 Light Mech including the aforementioned varient with the 30% cbill bonus, it is concidered to be one of the best Light Mechs in the game, and is great for a light Mech.
My major issue with recomending it (or indeed any other light) is that it is a Light Mech, the hardest weight class to learn on, they cannot take much incoming fire but are rather hard to hit, they do not usualy pack that much armor and need to both stay in the fight and survive fighting for several minutes to get the sort of score that a heavy or assualt will get in 30 seconds of combat (a good Light pilot is capable of doing just that), and you have to be willing to take the occaisional early death, or you will get very frustrated because if a heavy or assualt Mech (or even some Lights and mediums) gets off a good/lucky shot they can kill or cripple the Mech in one hit

My top 3 heroes..
Jester, 4MPL's + 2LL's and a big ol XL, JJ's and dual AMS. Great pug mech.. (my most played mech out of 100 mechs)
Misery ac20 + large and medium lasers.. it's a stalker with an AC20.. need i say more? (run it in my CW drop deck too)
Illya.. while this mech has gone out of popularity, with the new armor buffs Cataphracts are really pretty strong again, but the low arms make it a corner peeker/bralwer, not hill humper which everyone loves. (i sold it on accident, but so want it back! triple UAC5's, pretty deadly, and very tanky
others that i enjoy
grid Iron, Basicaly a C-bill booster 4G.. AC20+2ML. Its a tanky bralwer/flanker that doesn't do a ton of damage, but doesn't need to. 250-350 damage will typically net you 2-4 kills and a bunch of assists
Sparky, A 55 ton energy boat.. Kinda Jester Light
Arrow, Blackjack hero run dual large pulse +6 machine guns of awesomeness. Lots of fun and much better with machine gun buffs
Deaths Kneel. 4 MPL's runs hot as heck, but tons of fun and cute too! very fast, and can out damage the SLP lights, just need to use that speed to stay out of range
I have a fewe others, but i don't run that well in them, Fang, Huggin and pirates bane, which IMO are a bit more situational. The huggin is feast or famine for me, and the PB just does not fit my style. Fang is fun but ac10+ a pair of large pulse is kinda mediocre, there are just better dragons. I have not spent anywhere near as much time in the pilots seat as well with these, but as far as mechs go i would call them average.. (i am sure some would disagree on the PB though but it just isn't my style).
Take this post for what it is.. lots of how much i enjoy them.. But Jester is by far my favorite mech.. that thing has earned me a good 100m bonus credits..

My smartest hero mech purchase (so far) was the Orion mastery pack, which I bought after playing my first match in a trial mech. I then played my next 24 matches with only the hero Orion and premium time. Hero mech bonus + premium time + 24 cadet bonuses = CHA-CHING!!!!! Two months later, I have 21 mechs plus two empty bays, and a nice bank. The Orion may not be the best mech, and I don't know how much more playing time it will see, but it was a great learning mech. I highly recommend it. After using it's mediocre speed, you will know if you need more speed or if slower mechs will work for you. It's hard points are very versatile, a couple of each weapon type. This enables a player to experiment and see what kinds of weapons you like. After playing the Orion, you will have a much better idea of what works for you and what doesn't. The Orion may not be the best mech, but it's not a bad mech, either.
