If you're getting angry and yelling at folks over the outcome of a 5-10 minute battle, your problems run deeper than a poorly played mech.

Just as an example I've played ONE DOTA 2 game in my life, and that was more than enough. I was visiting my brother in law, who plays, and he wanted to show me the game because he thought it was cool and I might be interested in it. So, we go into a match and he warns the team that he's letting a relative borrow his account for that game and I'm new. Immediately, VoIP fills up with death threats and raging obscenities that are appropriate for spoiled brats who have no interaction with the real world. Ok... we turn off VoIP... so, then the text chat fills up with things like "I hope somebody kills you" and so forth. Over a video game that means absolutely nothing. Right... So, we won that game, I - ironically - was not even the worst performer on my team - and I'll never play DOTA 2 again because I don't actively seek to interact with sociopaths. And many online games are full of these types. In the grand scheme of things, MWO is extremely tame.

This game's toxicity doesn't hold a candle to DOTA2 or League, not one tiny, minute sliver. That said, allow me to add a little sodium chloride to the mix.
It does have it's own sort of "put a plastic bag over your head and inhale deeply" demographic though that you'll get in almost anything remotely war-sim (and this is just enough to get them in spades), who can't shut up, can't stop contradicting good calls, can't work as a team, and spend their time passive aggressively growling like Wilford Brimley on a bad day while tanking your matches, game after game because advanced age and advanced stupidity means **** you, and **** your team, they'll carry being a special snowflake, just you see (and then score so badly, you wonder if gamer senility is also part of the package).
Those are a special breed, and when they start ******** on the COMs... boy, will you wish you turned off VOIP entirely. Don't you dare have a bad match around them either; they'll grasp at any straw to raise themselves up on a pedestal when by fluke they muster something better that one match than ya (and you'll never, ever hear the end of it, even as they faceplant a dozen times in a row after).
This coming from someone who's anything but some spring chicken anymore. Between the high strung overly competitive (outside of the comp leagues) sorts, and the Brimleys, those are often the two sorts that tend to show you even with an older playerbase, some **** only changes window deressing in gaming. Luckily it's an exception, and rare enough you can usually recognize the folks by name prone to it, versus having a faceless swarm of "why did I bother logging in again?" like League of legends and company.
That said, if you bring an ERLL LRM Atlas... you deserve everything you get if you're sitting behind a hill all match, fresh, while everyone else is trying to get something done beyond feed an oversized scavenger a padded score. No, really, burn in your fusion reactor

Even then, sometimes you just get folks (myself included) that make a dumb mistake for various reasons, and do **** all in the match as a result. Often in quickplay, often based on the bad judgement that your team mates know where to go, when to push or will support you (or even watch the minimap whatsoever)... or are just ******* around in some goof around build outside of FP to see if it's a fluke, or consistent thing to play around with.
Folks will always remember when you **** up, and almost never, ever when you do spectacular to boot. That's a thing gaming has always had in spades. Nevermind if you consistently do great... **** up rarely, and boy howdy, it'll haunt you. This game is no different. Crack 1000+ in group or quickplay, nobody says a word. Derp around a corner and get blasted by an entire lance or more before you even get off a 100, expect everyone to remember that. Hell, punch past 3000 damage in FP? Expect a group of another unit to ***** about you taking too long to eject into your next mech, nevermind having chewed through damn near an entire wave yourself. Because it wasn't them that did it. So you ****** up. Seriously. Gaming is an odd beast.
The older demographic with its own bugbears aren't something you'll notice much in DOTA2 (outright AIDs of a community) or League (A cancerous tumor with sparkles and smiles on the surface), so it tends to stand out here in stark contrast, potentially skewing what the overall community is like.
You tend to notice it more because the age range tends to be pretty divergent from many popular F2P and FPS games. It's -still- more civil on average. You'll get folks in constant elevated blood pressure overly critical spasstic leader mode, you'll get folks who can't keep their mouth shut and accept they aren't drop calling anything, you'll get drunks and hardcore druggies who just blather non-stop about their latest stupidity (or federal level ******* crime... derp)... and you'll still have a far, far more pleasant experience on average than most popular pvp games with a VOIP or just text chat. Seriously. Not even joking.
The forums? Those are some of the worst I've been part of though. One giant overused porta-potty, overfull and leaking everywhere. When folks gift you premium time etc. because you took the time to help someone, look at it from a new player perspective for a little bit of help, it's a good indicator of just how constructive this place is on average. I wish i was kidding there too.
The game itself? Pretty mature even when some tantrum comes around (and everyone has a bad day or bad game from time to time that has them act out of character now and then for whatever reason). You have some habitual problem players like you do anywhere, you've got some consistent bad trends that go along with the player base, but you don't tend to wonder why there's a social option whatsoever in the game compared to many, many others out there at least.
/end of steaming log.

You don't know true Dota 2 toxicity until you attempt to main a support hero in it. I want to play that game so badly, but my Crystal Maiden arcana is gathering dust due to the fact that every time I play, I get yelled at for being the entire reason my team is losing because I'm "not placing enough wards". The wards are completely sold out ya dinguses, and even more wards wouldn't have saved you from walking into the entire enemy team without any backup when they were already visible.
Er, yeah. Anyways, this game is one of the calmest, least toxic F2P titles I've ever played.

This is a problem that is solvable by running with a group.
If running solo, we should all understand that there are several playstyles and who prefers which one is a personal issue. I myself may not like the situation you described and have seen it often. But, raging directly on the player is not an answer (but it probably is on the forums

Having said that, I've been known to drop sharp-as-knife jokes just to rattle the offender.

The bottom line in QP is that Charlie lance needs to get shot at by the enemy. If you are in Charlie lance and are nearly fresh at the end (unless your team just stomps) you are doing it wrong. The pilots in alpha and bravo lance are much lighter and have less armor to spend for the team. When they die, you will die about 30 sec later...fresh or not. 5 on 1 battles only end one way when you are an assault...even at 100% health.
If you are the last alive in an assault, enough to get raged in more than a few occasions...it's probably your builds and/or play-style. We were all new once and each pilot here has done dumb things, etc. Learning from the better pilots calling you out can be helpful to better play. Not excusing abuse or anything...just sometimes the frustration expressed by other pilots is something to be learned from....assuming one wants to get better.

If there was a 10,000 Euro/Dollar/Pound pot waiting at the end of a match, I'd probably care enough. But there isn't. So i'm not going to insist (well, not too much anyway

But if I see said player on the forums, expect a few sharp quips from me.

That aside... about 1/4 of the rage i see is justified, from players that perform noticeably better than the rest of the team and justifiably complain about their team being terribad.
3/4 is from mad cuz bad guys who are sitting deep in the trashtier gutter, aggressively complaining about their team while being among the teams worst players, often the worst player.

The worst are the assaults that stay in the rear and not charge forward. They're assaults, assault something, unless you're an lrm boat, move to the front and get in the fight,

That said, I have no sympathy for the assaults that insists on staying behind to lurm and snipe. They often justify their actions with high damage scores even though the team lost the match, but never stop to consider how much BETTER the team would have done if they lead the charge.

Admittedly, you do need to remember the Warhawks and Supernovas in long-range configurations that can't exactly charge into the enemy's brawler Assaults. Should they share armor and actually move in when things are getting nasty? Definitely. But they shouldn't be pushing the front line and fighting at 300 meters.

Yep. Can be kind of a catch-22 when running short-range assault builds in QP. Play aggressive when your PUG team doesn't want to...die early and get blamed for the loss. Play more passive and wait on a oppportunity to present itself...if your team gets behind, you get blamed for not contributing more. Sorry to say...Life isn't fair, especially when you are running an assault....learn from constructive comments and shrug off the rest. All one can do.
