Try fitting anything besides small lasers on a Top Dog and run cool with it, then we may discuss how removing agility quirks wouldn't impact the way it performs.

Oh I hear ya. I know a lot of folks do a std 275, 4 or 5 ML and 2 LPL and the rest DHS and that seems to work pretty well and uses all 6 of the highest hard points. I know some folks are doing 4LL or ERLL just to get right side convergence. Others use the 3LPL 2ML build.

I'm a bit obsessive and need to use all the hard point. I have every form of laser vomit known so I run the TD as a bit of a special snowflake fast brawler (which in this game feels like a dying breed at the moment since so much Gauss/PPC means that unless you are quite skilled at approaching under cover you will get slaughtered a lot). STD 300, 8SPL and a single PPC on the right arm, though a LPL makes more sense but I want the aesthetic of a PPC. It can be fun. It can also be suicidal if caught out in the open. Looks good and runs cool though.

Medium lasers on the Top Dog works alright unless you're brawling, because even stuffed with heat sinks you can't fire more than 3 volleys without overheating. And TD is a brawling mech. The agility quirks along with the unusual amount of hardpoints are perfect for it. You don't need this specific variant if all you want to do is snipe with large lasers or PPCS. 5SS or 9S variants can do the same and also fit cooler secondary weapons.

8SPL and a single ER-PPC is what I use. I put the PPC there because I can't tell when I'm going to play some of the open maps, and sitting behind a slope waiting for the opportunity to do something in a match is boring as hell.
