I can understand what they are attempting by making people take Hill Climb etc to increase the skill cost.

However it really doesn't work on 2 levels.

1. the natural human irritation that you're made to do something you don't want to do.

more importantly though

2. They aren't useless they are more useful to some than others.

Take Hill Climb. It is worthless on a light mech but on a 100 ton assault that boost up a hill is handy.

also putting range increases behind a missile, laser or ballistic slot is a complete waste if your mech doesn't have one of those hardpoints. However not so much so if you mech does and would be using them in anycase.

Eh, that's part of it. Filler skills are disliked for 3 big reasons:

- Some of them are outright useless. "Wow, my all energy mech can get missile buffs. Nice... not."

- Many of them feel useless. It's bad enough to add more grind, but POINTLESS grind? Come on...

- They offer the illusion of choice, but grind is not choice. If everyone is going to grind out to the same handful of viable skill setups (aside from weapons), what's the point of the filler nodes? They don't "force choices" - they just lead to more grind to get to the same end game anyway.

Peopled wanted ROLES and CHOICE with the skill system, not a GRIND maze.

^This. Filler skills just extend the grind. They don't create choice. They're just the one skill that's in the way to get the good skill that you actually need. That isn't a choice. You still need that skill. You need it enough to go through the useless one, but that only reinforces the fact that it was a never a choice to begin with. Filler skills just prove that choice is an illusion.
