Feature : Allow players to choose an armor type (or equipment, or single skill branch) for each mech, that specializes against one single type of weapon (Ballistics, Energy or Missiles).
In fact part of this feature already exists : ACS for increased anti-missile defense.
But the idea is to further extend that kind of feature, and to more weapons.
Reason :
- Increase mech customization.
- Allow players to defend against the kind of weapon they dislike the most, for the kind of mech they are using.
- Allow developers to notice what kind of anti-weapon equipment players use the most, to check if it's due to a weapon balance issue.

Well as far as making sense, even 21st century tanks have different armor types that specialize against different types of ammunition...
But this feature is not about making sense : It's about allowing players to counter trends, and helping developers identify and investigate those trends faster, instead of leaving players helpless against them.
Like at the end of 2016 there was a trend towards LRMs, in early 2017 there's a trend towards long range energy weapons (large lasers and PPCs), and there was always a trend to favor pure energy weapons in close combat (they are typically lighter, leave plenty of slots and weight available to fill up with heat sinks, provide unlimited shots, pinpoint precision and no exploding ammunition).

these are actual things in the battletech universe.
Laser Reflective (Glazed/Reflec) Armor - reduces all damage and heat from flamers, lasers, PPCs, and Plasma Weapons by half but damage from falls and bumping into things is doubled
Reactive (Blazer) Armor - Reduces damage from missiles and artillery by half but receive normal damage from other sources of damage
Hardened Armor - Each point of armor takes 2 points of damage to destroy at the cost of reduced mobility and speed
....no armor specifically for ballistic weapons sorry......
These all have 3060-3070 production dates for the IS and all but 1 for the clans.....I wouldn't be surprised if they were released in the up coming time jump. If for the reason that they may be included in some future release, I doubt we will ever see thm implemented as part of a skill tree......
also depending on how far they want to push that timeline...in 3070, clans get Ferro-Lamellor armor which just straight negates 20% of any attack on it.....
