Any idea whether they are going to make unique appearances for weapons or are they all just going to look the same, like in that preview customization video? No unique skins would be kinda lame or is it just me?

Discussion, facts, anything please.

Yes there will be different skins for your mech.
Yes weapons will modify the look of your mech. the Catapult k2 variant is one example seen in the videos.

Not exactly.

The K2 variant has energy hardpoints in the arms, and therefore has big lasers instead of missile ears. What you put in the arms won't specifically affect the looks, a PPC will not look any different than 3 small lasers. The difference is of course that you CAN put lasers in the arms, whereas the default variant only lets you use missiles there.

I could see them maybe having visual changes for different weapons somewhere down the line, but mechwarrior games traditionally never had this.

Swapping weapons out on your mech likely will not change the visual representation of your mech. The weapons already have a visual representation on the variants, ie, if you put a gauss rifle on a hunchback in lieu of it's ac 20, it'll look exactly the same, and they'll both look like they're firing out of the big thing on your shoulder. There's no need to change cosmetically when you just swap weapons on a variant, you'll still have missiles firing out of the missile tubes, and lasers firing out of the laser housings.

It is a minor thing ofc. But since we are living 2012 and even tabletop gaming starts to obey WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) more and more I usually take it for granted we get eye candy like this in every video game which includes gear or vehicle customization, to some extent.

from this Q&A http://mwomercs.com/...y-qa-6-mechlab/

Will weapon changes be visually represented? –Helmer
[DAVID] Yes they will, though some weapons may end up looking very similar. For instance, if a laser is fully embedded into a ’Mech’s torso, so that all you see is the lens, that lens is probably going to look the same for a Small, Medium, or Large Laser. Though the beam fired by the laser will be indicative of the type of laser installed there.

There are different artwork designs for most of the weapons; a set of them was posted on MWO's Facebook page:

Also, some of the screenshots show that some 'Mechs do have different appearances with different weapons equipped.

Example 01A: a Dragon with single-barrel weapon in the right arm (presumably the AC-5 normally found on the basic DRG-1N variant)
Posted Image

Example 01B: a Dragon with a tri-barreled weapon in the right arm (matching MWO's take on the Ultra AC-5, thus indicating either a modified DRG-1N or a DRG-5N)

It's not as big a transition as missiles-to-guns (as was the case with the Catapult variants), and shows that attention is being paid to such details.

So it seems possible that single 'Mechs could, potentially, change appearance based on changes in their weapon loads.

Your thoughts?

My thought is that it would be very disappointing if the 3D model did not reflect actual loadout of the mech!

Probably not time to do a bunch of extra graphics and art for something that isn't critical pre-launch. Look for more eye candy down the road as they have time to develop it.

i think it should reflect it. some weapons are bigger and have minor differences.

Even though you're going ignored, it's good to see this question resolved. Thank you, I had this same question myself
