External Missile Racks seem very unbalanced in MWO. They can extend the target area of the mech's Side Torsos by more than double, render the mech unusable with missiles (see Bushwhacker) and if they are external racks they are obviously not part of the Side Torso's components or structure. Still they take a lot of stray hits so they need some armor. Perhaps they could just get extra armor to account for the larger target size or perhaps they just don't count for side torso hits.
Something to think about.

External Missile Racks Not Part Of Side Torsos

Maybe a unique hit box?
That is, it's not part of the main structure and can get shot off.
If we really wanted to explore that idea further than having an option in the mech lab to use a hard point location as an internal or external mount might be a line of thought to explore.
the issue with this however will lie with the critical space limitations which acts as a balancing factor between a mech being able to mount more or larger weapons vs one that has less free tonnage.
