See, I'm a Battletech Lore noob and now there's this Civil war thing. PGI wrote the very shortest abstract as flavour text in the Tech-Announcement but I'd like to get deeper into it.
Is there any sourcematerial or novels set in the civil war era which might give me a broader understanding of the evolving lore?

You can download MechWarrior 4:Mercs and play it. it has some lore in it on what's generally going on through the civil war when you play the campaign.
Pretty much one of the largest conflicts is Davion vs Steiner in war over territory and thrones. There some other conflict such as Kurita and Ghost bear fighting too.
