Every GitS adaptation as been steaming piles of crap because either those making the adaptation had no frikkin' clue what the overall story/message was about and/or cut out some of the side-plots and stories for time that ended up adding a lot of nuance and detail to the overall plot and message.
The only exceptions are Stand Alone Complex and the GitS video game for the PS1 that was released in the 90's and that's ONLY because they had their own stories that took place independent of the manga such that they could be seen as events that happened before or after the primary story and events in the manga.
Frankly, I have a feeling that this GitS adaptation will be just as much of a steaming pile of crap as any of the Bay-Formers movies.
Eh, personally I disliked SAC. Enjoyed the original Manga and the 95 anime, and pretty much have hated everything since. But found the SAC series to be very inconsistent, and the Tachikomatic Days thing was something more modern animes seem to revel in, but I generally hate (well the entire, "cute animal/robot sidekick trope, period, that anime is so damn fond of).
As for Bayformer level? It's possible, but that kind of bad takes effort. And even if it's middle of the pack in quality, that would be miles above any Bayformer film (past the first, which I found oddly decent, overall, but judging by the sequels must have been by accident). And I still would put money up that half the maistream reviewer hate (since the other half seem to like it) is based on the perception of whitewishing, since the only understanding of the deeper concepts of GitS most will have is what they read of Wikipedia. Similar to the idjits who complained about Iron Fist and pointed out that "there were other iron fists, even in canon they could have use"... ignoring the fact that THE Iron Fist that everyone knows (well those who know him at all) is Danny Rand, lost white boy.
And even if the Whitewashing IS a thing with it (which again, with anime, is a much harder charge to lodge, since the creators of anime frequently whitewashed their OWN series), that should not be used as a complaint or knock on the merits of the film itself from an entertainment stand point. Many of the GREAT films of the past, were very culturally insensitive (Sir Alec Guinness as Prince Faisal in Lawrence of Arabia?), but still great films.
So all I am saying is I prefer to judge the entertainment quality, integrity to the canon (on IP products) and then things like cultural sensitivity on separate scales. Hell, I give Burzum credit for making some masterful Black Metal and Dark ambient music... despite being a stomach turning, disgusting national socialistic racist pig. So I won't personally support him by buying his music.
And from that standpoint, anyone who strongly feels GitS has a whitewashing issue (which I am a little more ambivalent toward because of points mentioned in my first post on the subject), I am totally fine with them boycotting it on principle, conscience, etc. But a review made on the quality of the film that is skewed because of that, is inherently dishonest, and I feel that SJW mentality very much was used as a tool to attempt to deep six viewership of Iron Fist (and possibly GitS), which carried a hugely negative set of reviews from Critics (almost universally far left in nature) and yet holds a decent rating and reviews from actual tv watchers.
But in recent years, Media has started to be prety full of themselves and drunk on the "power of perception" they have through social media. And apparently they haven't learned how it can backfire, like what happened on Nov 11, 2016.
