Current MWO posterchild for this is Phoenix Hawk. Blech.
(Many humanoid mechs are fine, Atlas being the best of 'em.)

The Shadowhawk Wolverine and Stinger, all get honourable mentions though

I actually like the MWO Marauder a lot. The arms aren't slung too low or too wide and the torso isn't an ovoid pod.

probably some of the elements I dislike, TBH. The body to me is too wide and flat, and the arms don't remotely look like they are in any way special despite the arm design of the Marauder supposed to be a key facet of the design (and the progenitor ot the pipe cleaner arms on the Timby). Too me it looks clumsy and fat and graceless.
To each their own, of course.

Motorcycle helmet is so disproportionate on the PXH it doesn't even do the Gundam look well. If the head was 20% narrower? Maybe. As is, just blech on all fronts, IMO.

It feels very much utilitarian. I know it's just a pair of legs with boxes of various sizes containing weapon systems, all stacked on top of the pelvis assembly but that's what gives it its charm. ( as in "dragged itself across the dark years of the succession wars, held together with duct tape and steel wire" kinda charm )
Of the various takes on the concept, I'd say MWO's feels the best.
Too bad MWO's shooter mechanics make it an underperformer in the game. When Battletech goes live though, I'll try to grab one at the first chance I get. Much too flexible to let it pass.

Within MWO it is hard to choose. I love the Crab, one of my more piloted mechs is the Crab 27SL, the Phoenix Hawk 1B is my single most piloted mech in the game, love that mech to bits, design and gameplay wise. I guess it comes down to mechs that have a bit of personality. Still hoping to see the Champion make it into MWO, would love to see a 60 ton cicada running around.
