except skill trees that are completely open ended are far more prone to min/maxing than skill trees which force you to choose a role/class and limit you to picking skills limited to that role class.

because when you have to choose a role/class it automatically locks you out of the skills for the roles/classes you didnt choose.

That just makes it easier to min/max, that doesn't mean it is less prone.....

At first I thought it was sort of interesting to have such finite control and customization. It quickly changed though when having to actually get into and realise 99% of mechs will basically be spec'd out pretty much the same. Then listening to other people I started to wonder why pgi didn't go the pick a role method with perhaps some extra options available to tweak to personal taste. A lot of the time I find the simplest answer to be the better route.

The skill tree isnt a secret though. weve seen it. I can say with certainty that if it goes live the way it was, it will absolutely be min/maxed and will degrade into everyone using the same exact cookie cutter builds. Like I said PGI needs to learn from the mistakes of other games, and understand why they changed their skill trees away from a min/max system to a system that actually affects choice for players.

And you proved exactly my point trying to disprove my point...

Here's hoping that the compensation model they decide on/have decided on doesnt set the forums on fire... also must continue to drop in the fun IS mechs that maybe losing their offensive quirks like cicadas...

Think its possible there will not be complaints?

Seems unlikely; pleasing all the people; complaints likely whatever...

However... no complaints =! The masses enraged, picking up their well honed pick forks and flooding the forums with much passionate discourse, whilst cancelling or threatening to cancel pre-orders.

It seems to me that MWO has a similar problem to D&D3.5

D&D had tiered classes and MWO has tiered mechs
D&D has minmaxers and MWO has minmaxers

Those issues were one of the main reasons that drove the 4th and 5th editions of D&D.

However MWO has an advantage over D&D in that it can be changed without requiring a total rewrite and provided that the developers actually understand the design problems eventually it can be fixed.
