Is it only me that finds it amusing that both 'git gud' and 'join a unit' were almost the first responses, as usual?

No? Just me? K.

It just doesn't pay to bring TOO LARGE an alpha.

My Linebacker has 6 SRM6 and 5 CMLAS thats how it makes such a HUGE alpha . But I tried to improve my play by using a 2xLLAS + 2 x UAC5 timberwolf, moving with the team, not exposing etc and nope... I wasn't phenomenal... still making sub 200 game score.

I'm trying to help as much as I can, I'm asking for exactly how he builds things.

"Git gud" is unnecessary but "Join a Unit" is a great way to learn and grow while making friends.

Play style has a lot to do with it but if he is building 95+ point alphas on his LBK then something is very wrong.

That LBK build is horrible. I cannot replicate it because I cannot find enough Missile AND Energy points to give it 6 SRMs and 5 erML.

LBK-PRIME-1

LBK-PRIME-2

Two variations of the metamechs build that should serve as a example of how to build. I used more 'common' pods in case you didn't get the reinforcements.

41 point alpha and 44% Cooling Efficiency and 4 DPS. This is how I would run it.

Also take your back armor down to 10 maybe 12 at the most, a lot of people run with just 4 or 8 back armor but I just use a little more. So ignore the back armor on those mockups.

TBR-S

I recommend using Gauss on a TBR and then some laser vomit.

If you have good aim you can use the ultra meta TBR

TBR-PRIME

TBR-PRIME-1

This is how I run my TBR, I alpha, a couple times then get back to cover and cool off then re-enter the fray and do it again.

What other mechs do you own that you play regularly?

the cERLL is a pretty terrible weapon, it has too long of a burn time to do more than long distance poking. Two UAC5s is nice but I'm compliment them with some smaller lasers rather than cERLL.

TBR-C-

This build is so you can do your 2 UAC5 build with some lasers, I don't claim that this is a good build but I think it is better than what you were doing previously.

So to recap:

Back armor no more than 12 and no less than 2
Leg armor should be half your CT armor at the very least, so you have 80 CT armor up front then 40 armor is fine for the legs, you don't want it to be easier to kill you by removing legs than it is to CT core you.

One ton of ammo per 4 missile tubes.

Don't be the first into the fray, use your allies as shields as best you can without blocking them from behind, at least when you're not in a high armor heavy or assault. If you're in an Atlas or Direwolf you will be needed on the front-line to push the enemy. Even dying during a good push is often a win compared to hiding and losing when they push.

Stop trying for maximum alpha and just try to have +30% cooling efficiency and 4 DPS.

I'm not digging on anyone for trying to help, though I do completely disagree about the usefulness of joining a unit. A unit is a crutch at best, making you believe you're more skilled than you really are, at worst it's an additional source of potential ridicule for the a-holes on OpFor. I get quite enough flak without the baggage of a unit to deal with too.

LIES! Always go for Max Alpha.

Make sure you bring the 165 Alpha DWF to battle. You might only kill 1 person a game, but... just make sure it's the same weight as you, and it's all worth it.

Yes, now I use a 2 UAC10 4 MLAS Loki running at 4.57DPS and 31% cooling and it seems to be exactly the kind of play that works for MWO... supporting the push, scaring enemies away with the UAC fire and generally bagged me the most winning games I ever had playing this game all these years... not even my 2 UAC5 + 2 LLAS timber is doing so well, perhaps of the ECM?

I changed my timber to : http://mwo.smurfy-ne...f8caff0bce63a87

You need to be running max armor, no such thing as a glass cannon that is good in this game.

Change your Loki build from 2x UAC10 to 2x UAC5, and max out the torso armor.

Something like this.

NEVER run a mech without maximum torso armor, and try to keep your legs at maximum for 45 tonners and less, at least around 3/4 of maximum for anything heavier.
If you don't have any weapons, heat sinks, ammo or equipment in an arm, and aren't using it as a shield, then you can drop it to 1 point.

Yes, my loki has 70/14 already. I just stripped the arms down to 12 / 12 for tonnage since there are nothing in the arms. Here's the builld: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...1dfeae0deffa103

And here you are mistaken, your team can influence your performance but it is not a large margin. Also PSR has an upward bias and most importantly you are the only constant in your games and thus have the highest impact on your PSR.

I'm at the point right now where even at a loss I tend to get equal PSR 7 times out of 10 and sometimes even increases. However, I don't play anywhere near the number of games most of the top players play. Anyone else who has a similar play limit will notice slower progression.

Your side torsos are still underarmored, as are your legs.

If you really want to keep the pair of UAC10s, then remove two of your ER Medium Lasers from the left torso, increase left/right torso armor to max, leg armor to 48, drop arm armor to 1, move the UAC10 ammo to your legs, and add another half ton of UAC10 ammo.

End up with this.

OMG... these are exactly what I have been doing:

I am quite a die hard brawler, who chases after preys and get killed by focus fire and more often then not, overheat and die by suicide or focus fire... thats been the theme of my llfe as a mechwarrior on MWO. I love creating crazy high alphas and pumping them into someone's face...

But I have never once died due to cockpit?

HEY ORIGINAL POSTER, RIGHT HERE... READ WHAT YOU WROTE!

I mean, seriously dude... you came here to ask the question and receive enlightenment to your inability to generate a consistent upward motion in Tier Progression... and yet, it looks like you did not need to rent space in the collective forum brain at all to figure this one out... why you have not been moving up is summed up in this statement you made.

As many others have tried to tell you, running out in front to be the big brawler carrying the fight is a skill... there is much more to it than "charge and shoot until you overheat and pop or become a free target practice shutdown mech". Brawling involves getting close without taking much damage, rolling to spread hits over several areas, group support, causing focus fire to happen while avoiding it, getting out of the way.

Crazy high alphas only work when you hit with them, and get a follow up shot, and repeat... if you are setup to fire a single alpha shot, shutdown and cool to move again, you are setting up for personal failure as you end up with massive "facetime", and then become either a waste of tonnage for your team or a detriment. A single alpha does not help your team. Several alphas do. Maybe work on your weapons groups and not fire all at once... it is called weapon synergy.

Sounds like your attempts at this Brawling thing you like is why you, to use your words, "suck".

I highly suggest you switch to a different build type that allows better combat survivability.
Get away from assaults, not an ideal mech for someone with survivability issues, their armor does not offset the fact they are big slow targets.

Sounds like you do not need tips, you already know your problem...

You need to change your mech philosophy and play style... or keep brawling.

I'll be looking for you.

Brawling is something you need to do with support, and you just will never be able to count on that in the solo queue.
So it could very possibly be a big part of the issue for you.

That's not to say pushing/brawling isn't strong or common right now - just that in something like the solo queue it is a very high risk option with an unknown reward.
For a team or coordinated effort, it remains a high risk option but the rewards are also quite high.
For "general" play - something that is effect from 400-700m will see you get more consistent results - not necessarily stellar results, but consistent ones as you will be able to contribute nearly all of the time.

Yeah, might as well be speaking Attic Greek as to try to explain that to so many competitive players though.. because that drive to "be the best" kind of is what defines being competitive...at anything. It's just does not compute that others are wired different.

You can see it at that pick up game of hoops, or volleyball, baseball, etc.. there is always that one guy who is always getting frustrated with the potatoes who just are having fun, because all they can think about is... "we're down 3 pts people, wtf is wrong with you!?!?!?!".

It's fine to act thusly in League Play, etc. But sorry folks, if you are solo dropping in PUGLand? You're in our SandBox now, and TBH, we don't really care about your latest Meta2000 UberTart Gundam.

The, "Meta2000 UberTart Gundam", sound very PTW'ish. Can a PUGLandian buy one of those for C-Bills? LOL! ;)
