for a splat build? Is there really a significant difference? One ton more per SRM means I could put on an extra CMLAS and do much more damage per ton...won't that make more diff than artemis?

Yes

34% smaller spread
Very important, unless you like wasting damage and have sub-100M effective range.

But won't investing the 1 ton into an MLAS work more damage in overall?

Yes.

Totally empirical evidence, but I've been playing and basic'ing my Griffins lately with SRMs in various configurations, and I've found that at least on SRM6s the tighter grouping of missiles do make a difference, especially when you don't land your salvo "full center torso" while jumping and brawling : when hitting a side/arm, there are less "wasted" missiles.

Also works well with SRM4s, not tested with SRM2s, and I could not see a difference with S-SRM2s, maybe a touch faster to lock-on but that's it.

If I understood your "splat build" correctly, that is ...

I don't know about the brawling thing, but with LRM, I get a similar feeling pretty often.

My impression is a lot of people scream "Artemis is a must-have" because they just perceive it as "some bonus" that makes their weapon "better somehow".
E.h. a MDD with 6xLRM-5 PLUS artemis. That's 6 tons / 6 slots. That's like equipping a TC6 on a 60 tonner o_0.
Or having Artemis LRMs and doing mostly indirect fire.
Do these people really think about what Artemis actually gets them?

With brawling, I could imagine it's similar:
If you count launcher + ammo + artemis + heat (plus other problems like ammo explosions and still crappy accuracy), the question arises if just switching to ML and more HS (and no ammo explosions and perfect accuracy) wouldn't be better right away.

But maybe that's just me. In the end, every build ends up being pure laser vomit for me, somehow Posted Image

If you artemis 5's you are beyond saving lol. Who would do that?

If you plan on using your SRMs beyond 100m and have 3+ launchers size 4 or 6 Artemis is worth it.

No. You'll heat cap way too much in brawls. Also, lots of your damage with non Artemis SRMs is waste damage.

I don't use ARTEMIS on LRMs but SRMs? You bet.

There's damage, and then there's effective damage
SRM6s are 9 and 10M spread iirc, which is decreased to 6.6M and whatever 34% of the other is.
That is a fair difference.

Observe the difference. It is significant.

It depends on wether or not you have the tonnage to spare.

IS mechs have heavy launchers already so on light mechs the extra weight for Artemis is really significant. On assault mechs much less so.

It's a tricky decision to make.

Not that tricky once you realize that you can just use Clan mechs instead. :D

But you asked about "a splat build?" How many Laser do you get before it is no longer a "splat build"?

Haven't tried it on the 4's since the spread change, but for 6's yes it makes a difference. I'm more likely to kill the enemy / destroy the component I'm trying to hit.

Faster kills is good. Without artemis, spraying all over the enemy, not taking them out as quickly, and reduced damage from wide spread makes a noticeable difference, to me anyway.

And yea, the laser isn't as heat efficient and just reduces DPS in a brawl, where you need heat efficiency to pump out a lot of damage quickly.

The thing with artemis is it requires line of sight from firing to target for it to work...and obviously with an SRM... that's achieved... but with LRMs... hiding behind the hill/building and blindly firing at some target lock someone else or a uav is providing....the spread isn't being improved.

Spread isn't, but lock time is halved, LoS or not
That is pretty big

Artemis does need a buff

Ive always suggested Artemis should give SRMs/direct LRMs increased crit chance like targeting computer does for lasers/ballistics

Is tracking strength affected by LoS? It used to.

Heck yes for artemis! Except my LOLRM5 troll, no artemis there.

If the ASRM6 don't fit (tonnage or slots) in goes the ASRM4.

I even have a 4xSRM2 LOLcust because what else can it do!! (no artemis)

Reasons for and reasons against. But typically yes!
