Just as a minor point but I find that the term 'Skill Tree' is really immersion breaking. It reminds me that we are playing a computer game rather than a battle between mechs.

I'd much rather that they called it 'Mech Tuning' or 'Mech Modding' or 'Customisation' or something similar

"Skill tree" is easily understandable term for even non-MWO players.

Maybe we can assume that over ~1000 years, the term "skill" evolves to a more generic meaning of "individual selective improvements", so the Mech itself has "skills" that can be improved. At least that's how I interpret it.

Does the fact that you are sat at a computer, using a mouse, staring at a screen not kinda remind you its a computer game?

who cares, in other words. Its just nomenclature.

If it's 'just nomenclature' why are you arguing that it should be one not the other? Surely it's better to choose a wording that's positive for as many players as possible rather than a arbitrary name?

and as to immersion once the battle is rolling I am focused and the rest of the world drops away so the more 'in character' a game is the easier it is to get into focus.

I would like the linear progression that some people have talked about. Mech Tuning would be a lot better than the "Skyrim floating skill tree" concept.

Have stats that you increase beside you mech (the progress bars). So you can see the effectiveness increase.

They should call it System Modules or some variation. I've heard modules mentioned in the books as a modification to the mech. And modules is a term familiar to the MWO playerbase. It makes more sense than skill trees. You're not a ninja who can find the path of least air resistance to boost your laser range. That makes no sense.

Frankly anything that sounds even vaguely lore based would be better than 'skill tree'.

'Skill Tree' is a game design term not a real phrase - how many guys who mod their cars say that they've fitted a new exhaust node in their horsepower skill tree or added a shock absorber node to their mobility skill tree?

None, absolutely none.
