It felt as if there is a sweet spot or range to the firepower of each class that works the best as squeezing out as big as possible an alpha doesn't seem to be the most effective.

In my limited awareness and experience, for a heavy mech, that spot seems to be in the 40 to 50 damage range.

What are your experiences so far?

(yeah, I know its more productive to say 4+DPS and 30%+ cooling but yeah just comparing and talking about firepower here)

IS Lights: 25-32
Clan: 30-36

IS Mediums: 36-42
Clan: 40-54

IS Heavies: 45-52
Clan: 47-68

IS Assaults: 58-65
Clan: 68+

Obviously, there are some major outliers. SRM bombers inflate damage to a massive extent. Dakka boats will also have lower true alpha but, since they can mostly fire twice in the time it takes to burn a laser, the effective alpha is actually comparable.

You might want to expand this to mention PPFLD in general, because otherwise the 2 ERPPC Thors and Hunchbacks don't count under your definition. Neither does the famous Pokebear KDK-3. Posted Image

Yeah, they are also outliers. They perform exceptionally because their small alphas are incredibly concentrated thanks to PPFLD.

In my experience, if your 'Mech is spitting damage out over an interval greater than 0.8 seconds (amount of time it takes for a 'Mech to both start spreading and actually get that component moving sufficiently), you should multiply your alpha by 0.8 seconds to get a solid estimate of how much damage you are doing to a single component. Like, 68 damage over 1.15 seconds from a 2+6 cLPL/cERML build is only going to be roughly 54.4 on a single spot while 55 damage over 1.17 seconds (5x isLPL fired 3+2) is roughly 44 in one location (might as well only bring four and alpha strike with it, IMHO). This actually makes FLD less of an outlier in terms of damage dealt; the real advantage is less exposure to return fire.
