Just something I've been working on lately, my completely customizable 3d terrain.

Lots of 'Mechs too, all painted by me. A few of the photos are POV battle shots, and you can also see the progression of the terrain.

Beautiful work, sir!

Out of curiosity, what construction material did you use?

2X4's for the hexes. You absolutely need access to a table saw for this, and a chop saw helps too. We started by chopping the 2X4's into foot long pieces, then ripped them with the blade set at 90 gate set at 1 5/16ths of an inch, then you set the gate to 1 1/16th of an inch and the blade at 30 degrees and rid the 4 corners off (Note: when looking at the "square" stock you will notice it is a rectangle, the wider side needs to be the top/bottom or you hex comes out all wonky, personal experience here lol). The shadow box is made from 1X4 and 3/4 inch plywood. The terrain tokens are made from 2mm sheet styrene (model railroading stuff). Total costs so far: 2X4's 13 so far: $45, paint 1 gallon of the light brown: $10, terrain token: $20 (styrene is $5 a sheet, and we went to a print shop to get the trees printed off) and a crap load of time. LOL. So total cost, with incidentals like gas etc is probably $100. Thankfully my brother had the table saw and chop saw for me to use.

You could use cardboard for the terrain too, you know. At that size, minis should be able to sit on a small hex comfortably without the toughness of wood. Cardboard boxes also happen to be a dime a dozen.

Hmm. Maybe simple watercolor paint could be used for terrain types as well, plus simple pen drawings for buildings and features... Much easier than working with wood, I think.

On the first day it took me and a friend 6 hours to cut 8 2X4's, learning curve etc. Second day we cut we did 5 boards in about 2.5 hours. That's including setting up the tools etc and clean up times. Not too bad. It's the painting where I got into time. All those level "0" hexes took forever to paint, the level 1,2,3,and 4 ones not so bad. Once again the second time we cut, then I painted it went like a breeze thanks to my brother giving me a better way to paint them. Took a cookie sheet, laid a foam "stamp pad" and soaked it in paint, then just rolled my hexes across it, stamped the ends and set them on a drying rack.

I don't even want to think how long it would take to cut out each individual hex with scissors, then enough to make to scale level... That would take months.
Note: there are well over a thousand hexes in a 2X2 map setup which is what that is.

And for hex heights: Level 0 are 1/2 inch, level 1: 1 1/2, level 2: 21/2 etc.

For buildings I had bought the Hex Pack Cities and Roads a few weeks ago, works perfect. (it's also where I got my heavy and light woods tokens images, scan and print baby, lol)

Also: why I went with individual terrain tokens: That way I'm not forced to have certain hexes in reserve just for woods etc. I can just set up a battlefield, then place woods and rough and buildings as i see fit.

Playing on the terrain is absolutely BOSS! It give very clear lines for sighting issues, and keeps the visceral feel to the game.

Wow that's real wood. That's pretty l33t, well done. I've totally got a table saw and a chop saw too, if I ever get really into TT I'll definitely be doing this.

Just PM me and I can give you all the hints and tips I've learned. Somehow neither me nor my friend have even remotely injured ourselves yet. LOL

Thanks everyone for the praise.

On a side note, the Heroscape terrain which consists of the master set, and two Underdark sets: Anyone interested in a trade?
And if this is frowned upon would one of the Mods let me know, be glad to delete this if so.

Very nice. You can use a cookie cutter on the cardboard. It's what we did. Very easy to cut them out that way. No need for a scissors.
