Is this bugged in any way?
I only ask since I was a gnats whisker away from moving from 4 to the next tier.
Now when I look in the UI I'm back at the lowest level of 5?
Seems a bit odd, but I'm not too sure how this all works, or not - as the case maybe.
And whilst I'm posting, I see some chat about the Matchmaking pitting t3 against t4 and t5, but how do you tell what tier a pilot is in during a match, because I can't see anything that would tell me one way or another.

You can't via the UI, but you can tell by the way T4-5 people play.
As for the PSR you'll bounce back and forth when jumping brackets till you hit a win steak, then it will stabilize. But you need to consistently win and or lose with a high match score to keep leveling.
Player base from what I read is low, so the match maker makes the best of the population playing at the time. If there is not enough T1-3 to place, T4-5 will be subbed in, no choice really.
Milage will vary based on day and time of day.

Thanks for the answer.
If I've understood correctly, this accounts for me going from almost the 'top' of T4 (the xp bar had almost no orange in it) to T5 with a full orange bar? So it's a UI 'quirk'?

I would send a ticket to support. It is possible the T4 full bar you were seeing was bugged, in that you did not have a full T4 bar but an empty T4 bar. Or you had a set of good runs then more bad runs then good, based on what I saw on the leadership board. Even though damage contributes less to the match score after the last patch, you are barely breaking 100 damage, if that.

Well, don't trust the tiers too much... plenty of veteran players starting and grinding new accounts.

You can't see other peoples tiers.
Match making is supposed to keep Tier 1 from having Tier 5 on their team or enemy team but there aren't enough players so the match making widens and picks up anything waiting. If we had a huge community we'd have proper match making.
If you were almost tier 3 and it dropped you back to tier 5 it sounds like a bug and you should contact support.

Oh wait i miss read. You were about to get into T3 from T4 but somehow dropped back to T5? Something is broken there.

Almost no orange in T4 indicates you were at the bottom of T4, not the top. A full orange bar indicates the top end of that particular Tier. So if your T5 bar is full, you have made a very small move from the bottom of T4 down to the top of T5. Nothing unusual about that at all.

A bug may not be what it is, but it is defiantly screwed up. As far as I can tell based on information I have read, support, and my own experience it works like this. Without the cadet bonus you are going no where, unless by some miracle you get put with allot of good teams. The bar nudges by nudges I mean it nudges so little one way or the other its sad. After the fact of cadet bonous its almost impossible to tell. Now your wondering if what I say is bs. Here is a clue. On several occasions I have gotten win streaks of four or more games, and the bar only nudges forward a tiny bit. By tiny bit I mean think along the lines of needing a microscope to see it. Damage numbers those games range from 300 to 600. At the end of every streak the same dang thing happens. I get nailed with a bad team, and down goes my psr.
To play mwo and keep your sanity after the cadet bonus you must do a few things. First get better, two understand the psr mean nothing, three enjoy faction warfare with a unit whenever possible, and four ignore the psr. I am sure some people have gotten lucky having good teams on a constant basis to get out of the hole, but the likely hood of that happening is slim to none. Especially with the LRM parade going on right now.

This is what happened. The solid orange is your progress. The empty bar is the gap between your progress and the next tier.
And tier is pretty much an experience bar. You have to be really awful to not crawl your way up sooner or later, and plenty of people in T1/2 still play like T4/5s. You could play nothing but Vindies with terrible builds only using a single hand and still climb some. There's no skill-based MM because we don't have the population for it.
