That said, there are alternative options for OCing 'locked skylake/kaby (6400/7400) processors on ASRock Mobos.

Locked multiplier processors overclock with manipulating the base clock, except increasing base clock can cause instability with other components in the system. M.2 drives are known to not run well/crash with base clock manipulation. K processors can manipulate both multiplier and base clock but most people will leave the bclk untouched for component stability and only change multiplier instead. That and multiplier change gives a much higher boost in clock speeds vs bclk change

That is an aspect regarding bclk manipulation that I was not aware of. Thank goodness I have the k

I totally get the money part, which is why I was suggesting not getting a GTX 1060 for more money and get bottlenecked, and instead stick to the 1050. I'm a firm believer in pairing computer components properly. You wouldn't take a Lamborghini engine and pair it with a Honda Civic transmission, why would people take a GTX 1080Ti and pair it to a AMD fx-6300 (I know I'm exaggerating a bit, but these things do happen)

Yea, i hear ya.. But there might be a point that i could spend just a little bit more and get a little bottleneck, that on my next MB/CPU upgrade would vanish and still be a solid card/build for a bunch more years.. (Most likely would need to get new ram, but might be able to stretch mine a little more, if timing isn't right. Could be a good place to save cash at purchase time for planned upgrade.) I have a Corsair vengence 8 gb, 240 pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (it's twin sticks that work in a pair, this MB has 2 extra slots.) You think it might be worth upping to 16 for 50 bucks? Or just skip a ram upgrade, for me it seems like 8 is enough. This part is more a mater of if the MB would support it, that is also a good board/CPU spot. I'd have to decide this point then i would suppose, unless new boards just aren't supporting this ram any more. I have not checked.

skip the ram upgrade, 8gb of ddr3 in your system is enough. Buying DDR3 at this point would be a waste of money as everything has moved to DDR4 now

Yea, i was kinda thinking that anyway. I guess i will have to see when i finally do get a new board if i can swap it for a short time.. (save myself a few bucks on initial upgrade.)

But with all your kind info and others.. Perhaps i should wait on the card and see if that 6 GB drops in price in the semi near future, aka 6 months. It sounds like that card would be a better option, and might have a bit longer shelf-life

perhaps it will hit that magic $150 number around nov, maybe black friday sale. :)

EVGA GTX 1060 6GB has dropped to $200 right now (you know my stance about matching CPU to GPU but if you really want that card): https://pcpartpicker...-06g-p4-6161-kr
