Better.
Still however going to be very flawed in practice. Good mechs will now be significantly more superior, mediocre mechs now terrible and the gap between good and bad weapons dramatic.
Take my Roughneck Reaver.
Currently on Live it has a 30% jam chance reduction on UACs - this makes running UACs and MLs a viable option. As such instead of putting 4 LPLs in it like everything else with high energy mounts you see them with 2xUAC5s, 4xML. With 15% ballistic cooldown this makes UACs worth taking so it's not like every single other mech and either running PPC+Gauss or just ignoring the ballistic points and mounting LPLs.
If you remove weapon quirks however....
With the skill tree instead of 15% Ballistic Cooldown and 30% jam reduction I can, at a steep cost of 1/3rd my total points...
get 5% jam reduction and 7.5% cooldown.
Worthless for the brutal cost. If it was possible to buy back to 30% jam reduction and 15% cooldown with quirks then maybe. It would be a huge commitment and I'd either need to wright off most mobility quirks, all sensor quirks and general quirks but it might be worthwhile.
The benefits are not significant enough to balance chassis on themselves.
IF, however, IF, that's added to existing quirks?
Okay. Honestly I'd probably skip most of that as an extra 5% jam reduction and 7.5% cooldown is of dubious value for the steep cost. Honestly a 5% jam reduction is worthless. Nobody is going to see that as a reason to use UACs. The only reason anyone would bother would be if they had a mech that already had 30% jam reduction and didn't need the points elsewhere. 5% is in no way enough to make using UACs viable.
Which is sort of the crux of the issue. The value of the quirks you buy are utterly inferior to all but the most pointless and ignored quirks and the very best of them at a cost of nearly 1/3rd your total points to spend are as good as.... 1/2 of the modules, not including the old skill tree.
The value of the skills themselves need tweaked. Quirks need left in. Otherwise you're eliminating all the progress you've spent years making in trying to balance the game. A lot of us will just go do something else for a while. I just started enjoying the game again, please don't do that.
The rest of it?
The SP interface, the mechbay, actually I'm good with it. The skill trees themselves... close. Much closer. I need to be able to wrap across the middle in more places. If I'm skilling up a mech with pretty much just ballistics for a AC2 boat or the like I have to buy laser stuff to get all the heat. I like that the heat/cooldown advantages are just general. I just think the values are largely irrelevant.
So long as it's a WIP I'd play this if the quirks were left in. Remove modules and skill tree, put this in to replace it. Which is really just removing modules because they were nothing but power creep and selling us back some of them to 1/2 their previous value but that's okay.
Please don't remove quirks though. Adjust them down on over-performers like you do already, adjust them up for under performers like you do already. Most people will just spend SP to get back what they 'lost' in skill tree removal and Radar Derp et al if they want it.
The fact that PPCs and UACs as examples are useless weapons without big chassis side quirks however is indicative that maybe those weapons need changed in general.
In testing the LBX spread reduction by the way I literally could not tell the difference on test targets. It was irrelevant to performance save in possibly 1 or 2 pts total to kill a mech; as in, functionally irrelevant.
Maybe that's what you want. I'd say double the values for jam chance reduction (actually 6x. 30% reduction is pretty much the bare minimum to make it worth the risk to take uacs) and 2x the value of LBX spread reduction.
However, again, that's a tweak sort of thing not a big change.
I'd play this. It's got some stuff that needs fixed and such to ensure you don't invalidate most the stuff that makes anything but a handful of weapons on a handful of mechs really viable (because without live level quirks, lets be clear, the rest of it isn't, any more than stock IS mechs are viable against tweaked Clan tech) please don't remove quirks.
I like the interface, I like the process involved. It's not that time-consuming. I went through and played with my Roughnecks and would have built them all a bit different. They would all be weaker than they are in live but since it's an across the board nerf (again, rolling back power creep fro modules) I'm good with that.
Oh, the refund of GSP? Totally legit. I get that some people are bad at math and want cbills now and to pay more (relatively because the refund value is more generous) later, well, please don't feel anymore obligated to make bad choices for the sake of people with bad impulse control or math skills. I'd rather have the GSP, by far.
