A GPU doesn't overheat in instant.
So Im guessing the GPU is permanently broken. It's typical a GPU can work either with default drivers or even it's own drivers on desktop, and fail when used on 3D graphics mode.
Sure you can try cleaning up dust but I would not expect anything to make a difference.
Weak PSU should just give up so that the computer "shuts down".

you can try a hardware monitoring program like HWINFO64 and see cpu heat and fan speed and gpu heat.

And as a dad of two young kids, no budget for a new rig. I think the problem is the Dell power supply. It's a 450, and the computer works until I load any game, and then fans start going crazy and the screen goes to black.
System is a dell XPS 7100 1055T I got back in 2011 (IIRC)
Should I get a new power supply on amazon like a corsair 650, or should I not throw good money after bad?
Halp! Must get mech fix!

Update! My pic was diagnosed with a dead motherboard and fritzing out power supply. So the good news is, getting a new computer. Looking at a Digital Storm Vanquish 6. I found out I qualified for 0% interest, so 120 a month sounds damn reasonable to me!!!

as much i will suggest getting a pre built PC
Digital Storm PC are way overpriced when comparing other system builders
CyberPowerPC are more value oriented and the parts are from off the shelf parts and bang for the buck
they come with warranty for the whole tower in case of any issues
