Faction info: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Great_Houses ; http://bg.battletech.com/?page_id=207 ; http://mwomercs.com/game/factions

Or you, if you don't mind, here's a gamer's take on them:
Spoiler

Depending on the faction you choose, you get discounts at different mechs (we have cheaper Ravens, for instance).

As for the changing of factions, we know next to nothing about that, sorry.

There aren't any specific bonuses or advantages to any faction in particular, although once Community Warfare is implemented, the resources of a faction might make guns cheaper for their pilots, or something of that nature.

I vaguely recall the devs saying something to the effect of faction change being possible but not something you do on a whim.

As to the lore behind them;

The Inner Sphere is broken into Successor States, each ruled by a House of nobles.
Houses Davion and Steiner form the Federated Commonwealth, the single largest and most powerful successor state. House Davion (and the Federated Suns) are usually the designated "good guys" not because they're particularly good, but on account of being generally less evil than everybody else, and not being responsible for any particularly gruesome oppression or atrocities. House Davion has a strong, honorable military tradition, but their honor is more the "don't step on ejected pilots" variety than the "fair fight" variety. They utilize logistics and strategic application of overwhelming force to achieve victory.

House Steiner is obscenely wealthy, being run by some of the best businessmen in the Inner Sphere. Businessmen, however, do not make good generals, so their military suffers somewhat, despite having some of the best equipment in the Inner Sphere. They are often joked as using the Atlas (100-ton assault mech) as a scout. They don't run around murdering people (usually) but have their brutal moments, and the vicious little monster called Katrina Steiner-Davion is generally associated with them. She murdered a lot of her family, and was ultimately responsible for the FedCom Civil War, though that isn't for awhile.

House Liao runs the Capellan Confederation. The Capellans use actual tanks for their scouts, and have a tendency to fight dirty. Very dirty. The first thing the Federated Commonwealth did was invade them, and they haven't forgotten that.

House Kurita runs the Draconis Combine. They have some very... strong... traditions, and generally utilize fanaticism and "zerg rush" strategies in war. They also have mechs with katanas. It is awesome.

House Marik runs the Free Worlds League, which is basically Animal House the government. They splinter at the drop of a hat, but are surprisingly potent when threatened as a group.

You actually did, though you picked the "Lone Wolf" variety of Mercenary, which doesn't affiliate with a particular company. It's the same as the avatar selection.

First step is looking yourself in the mirror and accepting that you're not a bad enough dude to pilot one of House Liao's death-dealing Urbanmechs. I mean...really...check out the 2nd Capella Defense Force insignia. How sweet is that?

I think you missed someone? We may be small but damnit we exist, infact that's about all we do. :<

Join clan Rasalhague if you like space vikings in robots... However I'm getting a strange feeling that the future looks not so steller for us...Nah, we're going to be fine. The FRR is a totally safe place to be now and in the immediate and long term future...I'm sure of it. ;|

Oh, and we're not made up of waiting clanners, we're made up of crazy brave 'mech pilots who know that the whole place is going to go to hell in a handbasket and we're not gonna flinch, that's how Rasalhague members do things! FRR PRIDE!

I'm less familiar with the FRR and didn't feel terribly comfortable writing about it. Good luck with, when is it, March? April? Yeah, I'm sure you'll be busy. :)

One way to think about which IS house/nation to join is to think of the people you want to fight. Marik oppses Lyrans and Capellans . Capellans hate the Davions and the FWL (although they are now allied). Fedsuns Hate the Kritas and it is returned in kind. Lyrans do not like Kuritas. And the FRR hates mercs.
