Wasn't sure where to post this so general discussion makes sense to me. So im a new player, about a month now. Just mastered my mad dog. Bought 3 of 4. Im thinking of joining a unit beacause it seems like the next logical step. I need to earn some mech bays, could buy em. So on to my questions.

1. Should i join a unit this soon?
2. Should my next mech be an IS mech so i can drop with an IS group?
3. Should I join a merc group or look for a clan unit?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It is never too early to join a unit. Do it. Helps you to become better that much faster. Since you got Clan mechs already, just join a Clan loyalist unit. You can switch later.

1. If you think you found a good unit, go ahead and join. No need to rush, no need to delay.

2. That depends on if you found a good unit and if they're Inner Sphere. (I tend to enjoy my Inner Sphere mechs more than my clan mechs, TBH.)

2. This is totally on you. What do you enjoy playing more? Do you like the idea of having the option to swap back and forth?

with the new global chat maybe join a faction and talk in the chat and see who you meet b4 you decide on a unit.so you dont commit to a unit you may not like.

If you like clan tech as well as IS tech go ahead and and join a merc group. They are more flexible and if you switch contracts you can use both techs in Faction Play (FP).

But if you intend to use only clan tech at FP and stay loyal to a single clan, then your choice would be obviously to become a loyalist. Just remember that if in the future you decide to leave a faction it will bring you obnoxious penalties.

Teams are how you learn. Nobody gets to the Olympics by winging it - the joined a team full of people to help them learn how to do it right.

Join a team. Loyalist, merc, doesn't matter. What does is of they're around often and when you are and seem like they're willing and able to help you.

Joining a unit isn't necessary in order to learn the game at all. However, it can potentially speed up the process and most importantly save you time and c-bills on bad choices you'd make without a certain degree of experience.

Group queue is much tougher than solo queue. It could be more frustrating.

Thanks to all who replied, i really appreciate the input. As of right now i'm still unit less. I posted a message in the hiring hall and go a few reply's and am considering signing up. Isnt there a better way to go about this? I cant believe there is no in game mechanic for unit building. Id like to play with these units before i commit one way or another.

1. Should i join a unit this soon?

I wouldn't make sure you play with the people and see if you fit in. There are lots of units out there to pick from. They have different time zones, different levels of training and play different. For example if you love cw, my unit wouldn't be for you we almost never play it. If you want to get I to comp/group Q play it would be a good idea.

2. Should my next mech be an IS mech so i can drop with an IS group?

If you have maddogs I would stick with clan for a little bit. Group Q you can drop with any mechs.

3. Should I join a merc group or look for a clan unit?
I would pick one of the house clan teams. They're easiest to join the TS servers and group up without joining a unit. Join the mercs later if you find one you like.

Try to get teamspeak up and running, then check the faction warfare forums for unit teamspeak info. That way you can hang out and see if the unit your interested in is active / you fit in before hand.

You might want to join a merc unit unless you have your heart set on being a loyalist for a specific faction (for lore reasons). Though there are a lot of famous merc units in lore too.

As for mechs, when your starting your going to be spending a lot of time in those mechs grinding so try to get something you personally enjoy / think would be fun. If you can drop a few dollars to get a hero mech the 30% cbill boost really helps out.
