OP: Your thread, if serious, is pointless, and reeks of classical "angry old man" lunacy, where everyone was tougher "back in mah day" because they had to walk uphill to school in both directions in the snow in July. If your thread is a joke, it's a good one - kudos!

That being said, many people honestly seem to think that everything is a competition to prove one's manliness, including games and other trivial things. This is a game, not life. Nobody is under any obligation to "stick it out and prove how tough they are." Some people clearly feel that way thanks to the sunk cost fallacy, and that's their problem. As for the rest, when the game ceases to be fun, they will leave - and that is there choice.

Many people need to stop confusing facts with whining and a refusal to bang one's head against a wall for "not being tough enough to keep playing a game after it ceases to be fun."

To be honest... It was a little of both.

That said, yes, I'm a grizzled old fart gamer who remembers the old days when games were designed to be challenging... Yes, we did effectively walk up hill both ways because we didn't have save points. You die, you go back to the beginning! Posted Image

Today you design a game like that and it's ripped to shreds in forum for poor design, lack of foresight and impassable difficulty.

I suspect more than half of us are just bitching and arguing to pass the time around the burning oil-barrel trash fire that is MWO.

True, but even though I also grew up in such an era, other things were different back then. For one, I had a lot more free time as a kid or teenager to play video games and run through the same levels over and over again. Today, I don't have time for that crap; that's why I only play video games that can be picked up and put down quickly and easily - none of this multi-hour long commitment type of stuff. In a way, I no longer play them to be "challenged," but to have fun. Yes, yes - obviously, some level of challenge IS part of the fun, but the challenge is no longer the main concern. I'm not looking for credit for beating Super Mario 3 in under 2 hours or something - achievements like that don't mean anything to me anymore as I've gotten older.

I also think that a mix of rose-colored glasses, wonder at the new marvel of computers games, and the lack of developer experience back then made everything seem cooler than it was. Video games of any sort were amazing back then, and the technological advancements were mind-blowing when big leaps happened. Plus, even the developers had so little experience that nobody really knew what "crappy game design" was back then. Many of those games have not aged well - and I'm talking about game play, not graphics - and for every huge hit on systems like the NES, there were at least 2 utterly horrible games that nobody remembers now.

Sow/reap. repeat. What is allowed is what continues. Critics were shut down early with board n@zis (F-rcht, etc). Snowflakes thrived. I left for about 4 years after that. I thought, surely, snowflakes would have been shut down by the same means by now. I guess we know what the teams are. I'm just here on rare occasions to shoot stuff.

I would also make the argument that the nature of "a challenge" has changed over the years.

Back in the day, a challenge would be beating a super-hard NES game. Or, beating it with self-imposed limits, like beating all the robot masters in Megaman without using their weakness weapons against them.

These days, challenges live on, but now you go out and buy an Urbanmech or an Awesome or something and play it in MWO. Not everyone wants easy mode.

Seriously, what the heck is a snowflake outside of the politically implied term from the last presidential election for anyone who dares point out facts?

People want a game to be fun, not a pointless challenge. Calling them all "wimpy snowflakes" is simply attacking the messenger without offering any facts (or even intelligent opinions) to support your position. And, honestly, I can't even tell what that position is. People don't like certain changes, so they naturally complain about them; that's called "being human," not "special snowflake syndrome." Hell, you came out of hiding to complain about people complaining - I should haven't to point out the irony in that, snowflake. Posted Image

Nobody is obligated anywhere in life to just "shut up and take it," and certainly not in something as completely trivial as a game. They are free to voice their opinions, and while you don't have to agree, attacking them for having opinions is far more immature than being a "special snowflake."

There was a time around here where players, regardless of their distinction or affiliation, wore kevlar vests... Stood fast on their convictions and leaning into adversity with dogged determination.

Now... It's like every special snowflake has migrated from college campuses across the world to MWO.

It's like neither the player base nor the developers can sneeze in any general direction without personally offending some segment of the community.

It's like over night over half this player base lost their cajones... They can't play without feeling disenfranchised, they can't forum war without feeling personally attacked.

One thing for certain... They are masters of spinning hyperbole, utilisation of strawmen arguments and feigning indignation.

The face of MWO has seemingly transitioned from this:

Lol. You don't have a clue, do you. I'm not here to educate you on what has happened in the past beyond the admitted pittance of an effort I've already put in... but. The fact is that PGI years ago elevated white knight forum drooling butt kissers into moderators via Pirhanna games who immediately deleted any post criticizing the game, PGI, Pirhanna, or individual devs who just plain lied after speaking in ironclad absolutes. Some of those mods "played". The most notorious was afk in every game, earning xp on the backs of his team while putting in 0 effort. Those pointing it out were labeled as the "vocal minority" and had accounts banned, posts deleted, or changed the wording sometimes into the exact opposite of the author's original post. They even put in the name and shame policy to stop people from coming to the forum to name that specific mod. The tyranny continued for months. It lessened when PGI basically shoved Pirhanna out the door. The vast majority of competitive players went away. I'll probably never compete in this game again. I can't take it seriously as an esport under the current management. I'm just here to have fun. What you don't know might make you eat crow. Snowflake IS a much newer term than the events which transpired. But... it so very very much fits.

Lol, I was making a general statement about the US and it's trend of disingenuous indignation for literally anything.

& @LordNothing..

Er, you guys do get that what I wrote was a joke right? Hence the 'Live, laugh, love' thing at the bottom. I just got criticized for having no comprehension skills, by someone who missed that my whole rant was me being silly... Wow. In a funny way, this illustrates the problem.. Unless of course LordNothing was being silly back at me...?! In which case, 'Haha! Sir, you got me there!'

i find it amusing how much effort people put into finding fault with things that people say and so little into basic reading comprehension.
