An honest man lives with his family. His neighbors are bandits and thieves. Everyday on his way to work, he has to protect himself from robbery or worse. He can not allow himself the freedom to do as he pleases, for if he is hurt, who will provide for his family? So, while others lounge about, enjoying luxuries, he forces himself to train. He controls every aspect of his life, giving up the simple joys that others enjoy so that he can do his duty as a father and protect his family. He eats little, so that his young can grow stronger than he, and sleeps less, so that he may spend his time training his body to fight. He has no hobbies, as he can afford none. His only entertainment is in seeing his children grow in the traditions of his family.
He does not allow his children to roam far while they are at play. Nor can he send them to the local school, because he knows they will be assaulted on the way, and he cannot protect them there, and perform the work needed to provide for his family both.
Everyday, he rises before the sun and does anything and everything needed to protect his family, and provide for them. it doesn't matter that others call him names. It isn't improtant that others say he treats his family like prisoners. He knows the truth, as does his family. So every day he rises, ignores the pain and injuries of the previous days, and thinks only of the love he has for his family, the love they have for him, and his duty.
If you can understand this story, then you can understand what it means to be Liao, and you can understand why I have no respect for those who would force their "freedoms" on others.
