I'm looking to dip my toe into faction play. Seeing how I don't belong to a clan or whatever or have even one full drop deck I thought I'd start by doing some scouting missions. I've been searching the web but I'm not finding answers to some basic questions I have.
First question is, what is a mercenary? Should I join a faction? If so why?
Second, why would you choose one faction over the other? Do players make this decision based on lore?
Third, what do you do with loyalty points? What kinds of rewards can you get with them?
Faction Basics?

A mercenary is someone whose join or created a unit, and took a week long contract for a faction, (I hear there are longer ones, but cannot recall.) You should only pledge loyalty if you're sure you wanna stay in tht faction, or if you plan on just grabbing some low hanging mechbays and then deserting.
I chose based offa the players I met and fought with/against. Though, to be fair, I did lore it up as well.
Check the faction rewards tab. mostly loyalty points just level you up to get /cbill , mechbays and /mc.
Also, I'd suggest checking out This Primer for an intro to the game mode.

Thanks. Sorry I cannot access the in game faction tab because I'm offshore at work. A couple more questions if you don't mind.
What is a "loyalist"? Is the a such thing as "loyalist camo"? Loyalist mechs? I have a CND-AH, is that a loyalist mech?

Loyalists are locked to one Faction. No loyalist camo but there is faction camo's. Your Centurion is an Inner Sphere mech. You need to either create your own Unit and take an Inner Sphere contract, join an existing Unit that already has an Inner Sphere contract, or join one of the Inner Sphere factions as a loyalist. Those factions are FRR, Kurita, Steiner, Davion, Marik, and Laio.
Edit: If you only own one mech, you are probably not quite ready for Faction Play matches. The invasion matches require the use of four mechs per match. You can use trial mechs but it's not a great idea.

No I have several mechs. I just don't have a full drop deck. I'm only planning on doing scouting missions right now.

Koujo go merc is scout mech can take up to 55 tonnage while clan can take up to 50 ton mech so check what you got availble to make your decision if you want to make a 7 day contract on is or clan.
merc = 7 day contract on faction, take the least populated is or clan faction to get most cbill reward, get merc reputation point
loyalist = contract on one faction forever unless you wanna take the loyal reputation penalty to switch.
reason why i suggest merc over loyal for you since you new i guess you have no reputation rank on anything and merc give you chance to feel both sides withouth reputation penalty. Once you got max merc rank you might wanna go hunt a loyal rank for rewards or just stay merc for the flexibility.
