Reinstalled Windows and I need to install MWO again.
Are the MWO Portal or Steam my only options now?
Can't I just download the MWO launcher so I can start straight from my desktop?

Download Just The Mwo Launcher?

Is the portal not the launcher?

The Portal replaced the old launcher. So, yes, that and Steam are your only options now.
That being said, I fail to see how the portal is functionally different than the Launcher, seeing as it is the launcher and involves the same number of steps.

I feel like the portal takes longer than the old launcher too.
The fastest by far though is steam. the fastest install on updates. ever.

I would agree about the updates, except it seems like it's re-downloading the ENTIRE client every goddamn time. Like, the SSD MWO is on is strapped for space, right? Every patch day, I have to go in and clear some space so it can download all 12.5 GB of the patch. There is nothing in that patch that should take that much space, so I can only conclude it's almost the entire game.

Go Steam, and don't look back.
Auto-updates > Everything about the launcher
Auto-updates > Everything about the launcher

How odd. I usually don't have this problem as I have a HDD with 1TB. but even then.... it updates fine with me. who knows what is happening there?
The only thing I could suggest what is happening is that the updates are downloaded as a zip, then unzipped and applied, which means its doubling the amount of space it takes.
so if it downloads a 800MB update, in reality, you're going to have 1.6GB of updates on your computer for the short time that it updates. At least I believe that's what is happening.

Do you have another drive? IIRC in the old launcher you could click on the gear and set the temporary files folder to a different drive to get around that issue. Perhaps the new one has that option as well.

I do. I could remove it to another drive, but it's still weird that every time I patch I have to do this despite having a nominal 11-12 GB free already and, after I'm done, the drive still has about the same amount of space on it.
