Remember when they promised a new Assault mode with one side attacking a base surrounded with destructible walls? Or something to that effect. Pepperidge Farms remembers.

It's called incursion.

So here's my take on the state of things for current game modes:

Skirmish: You kill stuff.

This is obviously fine, leave it.

Domination: You kill stuff except with the addition that combat is limited to one general area.

I think this game mode is fine. Leave it.

Conquest: You kill stuff. Kill stuff fast enough, you win. You lose if you can't kill stuff fast enough and the other team is winning by capping alone.

Improvement: Treat the cap zones as neutral bases with it's own small defense of laser turrets that fires on anyone approaching until the objective is taken, then the turrets are converted to the new owner.

Assault: You kill stuff except you have a base that acts as a trap for those derpy light pilots.

Improvement: Go back to the latter days where Assault actually had a base of sorts.
Better yet, give Assault the true game mode it deserves to where it's similar to FP/CW except on a much smaller scale with an attacking and defending team. You could even increase the duration of the match by switching attack/defense teams, best of 3.

Incursion: A poor imitation of old Assault except with walls and goofy objectives.

Improvement: Get rid of it and replace it with my Assault recommendation.

Escort: You kill stuff, except escortee's must be hyper aggressive lest the VIP falls prey to it's own AI.

Improvement: Give the VIP some weapons and a meaningful escort. IE: Bulldogs, Manticores, Cobras, etc. I think 4 to 6 vehicles would be fine, 3 in the front, 3 in the rear, shoot and moves, travels in a file to the extraction zone. Once reached, the remaining vehicles assumes a perimeter around the extraction zone.
Also, give the Atlas some weaponry. No MechWarrior or VIP or whatever wouldn't take an Atlas just to walk forward.
In turn, get rid of the stupid points that reveals the enemy team for no discernible reason.

At the end of all discussion, you have it right: this is "Rock-and-Sock'em-Robots" and the entire goal, no matter where or when or why is: to blow the red player into tiny bits and pieces and say "Ooooooh, that's so cool." And, as the Baby dinosaur so famously said: "AGAIN !"
