Really Poor Performance

Last time I was playing I was using SLI 480gtx running at 1680x1050 with maxed out graphics and it was smooth as silk
I'm running SLI 980 GTXs now running at 1920x1080 and the performance is abysmal...like nearly unplayable. Probably pushing 20fps or so it seems.
Did the game get worse or what am I missing here?
some maps like River City are even worse, mean choppy as hell.

How up to date are your video drivers?
I spent a week going back and forth with Tech Support and got 2 video driver download notices, after the second it seems to have improved quite a bit, currently I only see occasional problems when on Oceanic and all video settings at Medium, before I had issues on all servers and had lower video settings. GeForce tells me I can use higher settings but not sure I want to push it.
750 Ti GTX on 1600x900.

This is a problem for most AMD cpus and older Intels as this game wants a single core with a high clock rate.
With my 2500k I was overclocking it to 4 GHz just because of this game which took the biggest performance hit when they moved to 12v12 from 8v8.
This problem goes all the way back to the beginning regarding how they are handling the rendering of a mech in multiple sections creating extra cpu load.

You should be able to fix your problem as your CPU should be able to handle this game. It could be your SLI configuration. I dont know much about Xeons except that the 6 cores dont matter for this game. I thought you were just another poster with a old bulldozer or phenom II which is usually the case

the thing is...I had zero performance problems last time I played the game on slower all around machine although a lower resolution.

All low and 1080 =120
All veryhigh and 1440 =25
As poiinted out before by others, anything above quadcore seams to be a wast of resources. Some people trying the new Ryzen don't get that much more performance either.
I think SLI is also overrated. To my knowledge most games don't use them to their fullest. What you have is a wonderfull PC for editing, 3D rendering and the like but its not a pure gaming rig so don't aspect to much.
Something I noticed with Nvidia a lot of people tend to force stuff like AA via the drivers. Just try not to do so !
Set them to either "App-driven" whatever its call in english when the software set the mode or turn it completly off.
My experiance is, whenever you force a game that has some kind of AA support to use whatever Nvidia drivers tell it to use, performance goes down the drain.
The more options you force via Nvidia drivers, where its not necessary or the game allready has internal settings, the more the performances goes down.
Also see how your energie settings for the cards are. Max or powersaveing, how many screens do you run? Sometimes, even with one I found it to be set to multi-display.
Also keep your drivers up to date, best option is to make a clean installation instead of replaceing. Sometimes errors seam to be taken over and a Nvidias automatic installation provides a checkbox for makeing a clean installation. So its pretty easy.

In particular, alternate frame rendering, move AA to geforce experience and disable in game. There are some good (even though several years old) guides on the googly. I used to run SLI in mwo, and got it working pretty well, but from time to time some things will make it wonky (like water on Crimson). 1 strong card is better and less troublesome. You might in fact find limiting MWO to just 1 of your 980's will offer comparable performance, and better in some instances.

im on a 3930k @ 4ghz, gtx 660ti and have all settings on max except particles on high at same res you are running at. if memory serves this game doesnt play well with SLI (i coudl be thinking of a different game though).

Not directly. Xeons where made for endurance (running 24/7). Produce very little errors while running and mostly have lots of cores with a lower tactrate then consumer CPUs.
When you find a Xeon with 3-4 Ghz its not a big deal to run games on it. Just don't aspect them to run any faster.
Only newer generation of games will make use of more cores like StarCitizen plans to do, still open if they will succede. Don't know of any other game that will use more then 4 cores effectivly.
