I think part of the problem is that we're used to having it all. And now we have to compromise on what skills to apply, as we can't have them all.
We can no longer just level it all the way up be done with it.
I see it the other way, mechs were pigeon holed into settings. Each Skill was a take all at one time instead of increments. Most modules were leveled up, via GXP, usually at the same time then purchased. The GXP never had to be used on that module again and if the player deem it so, he could just purchased that one module then move it from mech to mech, be it old mechs and newly purchased mechs but the module never had to be leveled up again. Simply stating that things were wrapped up in big packages in different locations.
Once Mastered everyone had the same Skills and same quirks on a particular mech, with it being up to the player to decide which level of weapon, example ERLL / LPL /LL and/or MPL/ML/SPL, etc then which specific modules, all the while working with the specific set of quirks.
Now, base mech quirks have been reduced or removed, skills/additional quirks/modules are all on the same page and broken up into increments. For some it might be too many increments. PGI could have made fewer nodes but that might have increased the COST of a SP (skill point) when converting it from GXP, HXP, XP + Cbills. That is something that should be taken into consideration, would you be willing to pay 1200 GXP/HXP/XP + 60k CBIlls per SP instead of the current 800XP + 45,000 Cbill? Remember, the SP cost was much higher.
Just to add, I requested a refund for prepurchases across 3 accounts because of what the new skill tree would be providing/have available to Clan mechs, increased durability while leaving the disparity between isXL and cXL in its current form and Russ posting that providing the isXL the same benefits as the cXL would not be conductive to balance between the isXL and STD. Like WTF, IS do not fight IS anymore in FP, just the Clans. Now they are going to wait for the new tech, including the LFE, to drop before even looking into reviewing the c-isXL, LFE and STD balance for game play.
