The thing is that everyone is in the same boat as far as that. Although it sucks, it sucks universally, so it's still a bit of a level playing field that way.
I have to keep reminding myself of that when I take out a mech and it doesn't perform as well as I'm used to.

It'll just come down to finding a setup that works for you.

I think part of the problem is that we're used to having it all. And now we have to compromise on what skills to apply, as we can't have them all.
We can no longer just level it all the way up be done with it.

It's finding the right balance of skills for the specific mech that can be daunting and kinda annoying.

We also have to change how we play, as the mechs that we are used to no longer work the same way.

Like with my Locust. It was running a bit hot, so I moved some skills from weapon cool down over to cooling the mech down. And it's much better now. Although it's a bit more of a glass cannon than it ever was, so now I want to try moving some skill points into armor. Just not sure where I'll take them from yet.

This part kinda sucks too, in that I'll be using up SP in a bunch of spots that I eventually won't be using so I can see what works and what doesn't. I have the SP to spare right now, but for new players that will suck.

I have no idea what you ppl broke but after the hotfix i have had the most terrible hitreg with lasers ACs and PPCs. Im losing half a burn on my lasers because they dont reg and i have to adjust the aim, and on alot of lights im seeing the torsos take the leg dmg. My projectiles seem to either phase thru or warp around a target, esp if im aiming at a side torso or leg. Pretty much have to shoot center mass, even on a stationary target, to get a hit. My ping and FPS are staying rock solid and Im monitoring every computer parameter on my second monitor to try and find whats going on and I am finding nothing.

Dinosaurs were once "meta", until they were wiped-out, presumably by a meteor. Whatever the cause, from the ashes of that cataclysm mammals arose to become the new "meta".

Just saying...

But we the dinosaurs are playing this game, we grew up with the franchise, because of our love for the franchise we are still here. Every sane human being would have quit 2 years ago, after all the **** PGI had produced.

And I highly doubt they will find enough mammals, alias 14-18 years old, because they don't know what battletech is, or are playing the hip games [insert name of a hip game].

It hurts to see so many people I know, writing that they will be quitting, hiatus, uninstalling, cancelling preorders etc.
(I for myself can say, that I have played significantly less and I hope PGI will see this in their statistics.)
Because I want this game to flourish.
But maybe this is the only language PGI will understand. (But still I hope you guys will come back if PGI changes something.)

And I don't know how often I or others have said this: Maybe, maybe, maybe nexttime PGI will listen to it's community.

I also like the new skill tree:

- there is no real meta anymore, because of the choices which have to be make and i like that!

- PGI earns respect alone for the try to improve that game. I know publishers which throw broken betas on the market and the only thing they "improve" is the way of payment options and over expensive dlcs...

Thx PGI for the hard work!

no real meta anymore? good joke.

publishers that throw broken betas out? well what do you call peps that make more or less permanent balancing stuff over years, that make fundamental changes after 5 yrs that still somehow dont seem to work as intended, despite all the testing?

Yeah I guess in this current state that might have been an inadequate analogy.

And I just want to clarify while I see the new skill tree as sort of a shifting point for the meta gameplay, same as the cataclysm was a shifting point for the dominant species on Earth, I was by no meaning using the term "dinosaur" to refer to the veteran player base.

I respect all you guys, even though I may not agree with all of you, but that's just fine :)

Apparently many tier 1 players only got to tier 1 because of using meta builds instead of actual skill and now that the meta is changing, they can't handle it.

I went from thinking that this skill tree update was going to be a truly great update to the game, and the more I live with it(and have participated in all of the Public Test Sessions) the more and more disappointed I get with it.

There are several areas where I'm sorely disappointed:

The refund was handled rather poorly, all the result of Russ's ill thought out comment about "cheapskates", I know it had nothing to do with real world currency as he meant it, but that's not how it came across. Now I've gotten shafted out of $100,000,000 C-Bills because I chose to sell off $200mil worth of modules Monday night before the patch because I didn't need enough Global skill points to unlock 91 nodes on 3x as many mechs as I own when 90% of them already had 91HSP.

The UI of this system is truly atrocious, I understand how many times we click in game to get our damage and kills in, but that isn't the same as clicking hexagons in the Mechlab. Why can't we hover over Nodes at the bottom of the tree and see a "Google Maps" style path through the tree above it, a mouse scroll could cycle through the possible paths and when you find the one you like, you click and unlock or apply all of the nodes leading up to the one you've selected? It already works that way when we de-select a node at the top of the tree that's already been activated. Other issues that are all already well noted, lack of templates, overly complicated system for converting old HXP, HSP, and GSP into usable points. Why can I launch into a match when I have changed my "skills loadout" but haven't hit cancel or apply?

Next is the choice to go with nonlinear trees. It seems like a good idea at first, but when you give a truly cookie cutter path to get certain skills that are deemed "more valuable" then it limits diversity more than having a linear system with nodes that cost more or less depending on their real in game value. Why shouldn't full Radar Deprivation cost 15 nodes alone? I'd happily spend those points and not feel like I'm getting lots of extraneous abilities.

Why isn't there a true tradeoff required to invest in certain areas at the expense of others? Why can I max out the Agility tree as well as the Armor/Structure tree? I know we're already embracing a certain level of suspension of disbelief playing this game, but why can't we get some more sensible immersive aspects, you can't put massive amounts of armor on a car or airplane and increase its maneuverability at the same time.

I've said it before and I'll continue to beat this drum: Limits promote creativity; eventually we'll all solve the system we've been given and when we do, the optimal builds will be taken with the optimal sets of skills and the rest will be ignored except by the players who feel the need to be different.

I'm definitely not of the opinion that this new system is truly game breaking, but it has taken a lot of the fun out of it for some of my unit members and that is one of the most disappointing aspects of it.

But to conclude, I've said this in another thread, and will here again, this has definitely made it clear to me that won't be spending real money on this game for a while.

Is it because I'm angry? No.

Is it because I want to complain in a way that has a meaningful financial impact? Again, no.

Is it because this new system is going to take me so long to properly set up all of the mechs I already own that I won't even need to spend any of the C-Bills I have on new mechs let alone real money on new Mechpacks? Absolutely yes.

I already moved away from pre-ordering when they started providing Decals in place of Modules. Then they removed the premium time from upcoming Standard packs. Now because of the "progress" refund I've been given, I literally have no use whatsoever for premium time or new mechs.

Maybe that will change in a year or so after I've gotten everything I currently own back to a performance level that is satisfactory.

As I've said before, a poor choice of analogy on my side, and too complex to some extent I guess.

I posted on this subject when the page count was still in the teens and after playing around with it for a few days I am on the positive side of the fence with this patch. There are still some things that bother me like the time it takes to get the skill tree properly selected and the unnecessary nodes blocking key ones (here's looking at you hill climb) , but overall I am happy with the customization that is possible.

I was able to get my favorite mech the Ice Ferret to better then it was before the patch. However what was much more exciting was that I was able to get two mechs that I have always wanted to love but they were just too terrible to play not only playable but relatively competitive. I'm speaking of the Highlander IIC and the Myst Lynx. I was able to make the Highlander a close combat brawler that doesn't die when someone looks at it and I was able to make the Lynx a tanky back bitter that can actually take a hit. Being able to take two mechs that I considered at the bottom of barrel and make them fun was the deciding factor on how I am looking at this new skill tree. There are things that could be better but the sky isn't falling.

While you have every right to your opinion, I would counter and encourage everyone to try it out with the skill tree, even if you are new. If you ask questions in the forums, people are generally helpful.

I won't say its the best thing since sliced bread, but I also find it very playable... I would never claim this as "fact", but consider all the opinions before simply dismissing the changes.

Is it very different? Yes. Are you more responsibly for your skill choices (since, now you have choices)? Absolutely.

Give it a try on one of your least favorite owned mechs so you don't feel like you're blowing space bux if it doesn't end up exactly as you hoped the first time. Anytime flexibility is given, we are all bound to make a few goofs (FREE RESPECCS PLZ).

We can no longer just level it all the way up be done with it.

I see it the other way, mechs were pigeon holed into settings. Each Skill was a take all at one time instead of increments. Most modules were leveled up, via GXP, usually at the same time then purchased. The GXP never had to be used on that module again and if the player deem it so, he could just purchased that one module then move it from mech to mech, be it old mechs and newly purchased mechs but the module never had to be leveled up again. Simply stating that things were wrapped up in big packages in different locations.

Once Mastered everyone had the same Skills and same quirks on a particular mech, with it being up to the player to decide which level of weapon, example ERLL / LPL /LL and/or MPL/ML/SPL, etc then which specific modules, all the while working with the specific set of quirks.

Now, base mech quirks have been reduced or removed, skills/additional quirks/modules are all on the same page and broken up into increments. For some it might be too many increments. PGI could have made fewer nodes but that might have increased the COST of a SP (skill point) when converting it from GXP, HXP, XP + Cbills. That is something that should be taken into consideration, would you be willing to pay 1200 GXP/HXP/XP + 60k CBIlls per SP instead of the current 800XP + 45,000 Cbill? Remember, the SP cost was much higher.

Just to add, I requested a refund for prepurchases across 3 accounts because of what the new skill tree would be providing/have available to Clan mechs, increased durability while leaving the disparity between isXL and cXL in its current form and Russ posting that providing the isXL the same benefits as the cXL would not be conductive to balance between the isXL and STD. Like WTF, IS do not fight IS anymore in FP, just the Clans. Now they are going to wait for the new tech, including the LFE, to drop before even looking into reviewing the c-isXL, LFE and STD balance for game play.
