"An important trait of the Survival Tree is that Skeletal Density and Armor Hardening values are contingent upon exact tonnage, rather than Weight Class. The table below is truncated for clean formatting, but percentages scale at 1% per tonnage increment for Total Values, 0.1% for Per Node values."
Can a smart person please explain to me what this means?
Is it for example viable for a Light mech to invest at all?
Do structure/armor quirks influence this mechanic?

yes light mech get a higher percentage per node than heavy mechs

yes they do
41% structure at 20 tons for max nodes this goes down 1% per 5 tons so 35% at 50 tons 25% at 100 tons

investing in the Defense tree can be helpful,
but personally i feels its a very all or nothing Tree,
for light mechs you get between 6-8Armor & 5-7Structure for a Fully Kitted out Defense Tree,
which could be good as if your moble enough you can usually use that to help greatly,
for Mediums its around 7-9Armor & 6-8Structure,
for Heavies its around 8-9Armor & 6-7Structure,
for Assaults its around 8-9Armor & 6-7Structure,
now if your mech has Structure or Armor Buffs this will increase those as well,
any mech with good Structure or Armor Quirks will make out by getting the full Defense Tree,

At a glance, the Survival tree looks pretty bad, tbh. There's a lot of chaff in there, so you'll have to invest a lot of points better spent elsewhere. Might be worth for mechs with large structure quirks.

A spare point or two OR All the way. Don't do anything in between.

The sad thing: if you go all the way you spend:
5 points on fall damage reduction (2 Nodes with 25% would have been fine by me) which no one really wants
8 points on crit protection (which is actually an interesting effect, too bad you get lousy 8% bonus out of it)

It would be nice to be able to see the actual armor and structure values you get from the structure tree before you invest the points. There may be some fine tuning possible that you cannot see when it is listed as a percentage, i.e. is 1 armor point per component worth the extra 2 skill points. Maybe a way to see the mech in the mechlab before you click save.
