Last I heard they purchased back the rights to the series, and they were in a heated legal battle over the Tomahawk/Warhammer. It seemed pretty bleak and there was no hope in sight. Did the FASA guys lose the IP again?
Quickly on the side, as an avid fan of World of Tanks, I think this is a great Idea, just hopeful they incorporate alot of polish and custom ability. This is probably the best way to bring this series back from the dead.
What happened to Smith and Tinker?

nothing happened S&T are more of a concept house than a gave developer. They still had their license for MW from MS but the PGI stepped in saying they really wanted to do a MW game so they were able to work a deal with S&W so they had control of the license.

just did a smith and tinker search to see what your talking about, not that it matters, but they too were going to make a mwo tactics game for your iphone called MechWarrior tactical command, alongside their main game. http://www.ign.com/c...es/smith-tinker http://www.ign.com/g...d/iphone-124416 and its not marked as cancelled yet

MW:TC is the MechCommander spin-off franchise. Its been quiet and doing well. Never been a MechCommander guy, but if I were to own an Ipad, this would be why.
Also, Note that this game is vastly different than MechWarrior:Tactic, which is basically Battletech:TT, a turn base strategy.
