I realize many people are angry with the new tree and are scared of making mistakes that may cost them. So here's a thing or two I've learned in a couple days playing around with the tree.
First:
Run your mech unskilled in either a couple matches or in the testing grounds. I prefer hot maps for weapon testing.... Test how your mech feels, how it moves how fast it builds and sheds heat. After a couple minutes you can get an idea of weak areas in its performance and figure out things that need shoring up.
Second:
When picking nodes, look for the nodes that are your goal nodes and plan a quick path that may allow you to pick up things you want along the way without picking up too much stuff you dont want.
Third:
Cool run nodes are better than heat gen nodes. If you are running an energy boat, then you will want a bunch of both.
Fourth:
The magazine capacity and the missile rack nodes are EXCELLENT. They may free up some tonnage for armor/engine/heat sinks.
Fifth:
For heavies and above, structure nodes net you more health in general than armor nodes. Exception to this rule is when the mech has a bunch of armor quirks. Then the armor nodes become an effective multiplier. This is most evident on the Atlas and the Victor.
Sixth:
Radar dep nodes, even just 2 or 3 will greatly limit that lurmers ability to pound you.
Seventh:
AMS ammo FLIES out of its bin with all the missiles flying around lately. Extra ammo may be good.
Eighth:
The ECM nodes are worth it. Its two nodes that pick up a lot of useful other crap along the way.
Take this stuff with a grain of salt if you want. It all depends on how you play. I find that I take at most 3 to 4 minutes to spec out a mech.
Hopefully they will shrink the size of the tree to half or less of the nodes that are out there now.

too much work. just leave the mech as is until they release a manual for the skill tree and some templates you can prepare and load. or just leave your hands of software like that. the interface is worse then 3270 terminal on morse code output with creaky speakers.

The Interface may not be perfect, but I can go to testing grouds check the mech and then I need arround 2 minutes to click my nodes... thats ok for so much possibilities.
And we seem to have a much better balance right now than the game ever had!
So I say: Good work PGI!

game is now a time sink thats a waste of my personal time. i dont want to spend hours tweaking mechs i have already put time into getting a level of performance i am happy with. Then come to find out that even with tweaking the skill tree my fav mechs no longer function remotely like they did is reason enough to quit this game.
