Played around with some older chassis yesterday that due to meta were on the "meh" side of things.
Thanks to Skilltree you can actually buff them up pretty good to make them at least viable again. I think this is really awesome!
Thanks PGI.

That's only true until the meta shakes out.
Then it will be bad again.

Honestly I disagree.
Even with meta builds being there, you could see a fair share of Tier 1 and 2 players not really running meta builds, but near-meta builds tuned to their playstyle. But mech tweaks were fixed, so they only had "flavours of meta" to play with.
Now good players can fine-tune their mech stats to their playstyle and I even see Tier 1 and 2 players experimenting with "odd" chassis and winning.
Now I am not saying that there wont be cookie cutter builds for the average player...

That's exactly my point though.

Meta Player x Meta Mech x Meta Skills is a bigger reach over Casual Player x Casual Mech x Casual Skills than

Meta Player x Meta Mech is over Casual Player x Casual Mech

Given that all my mechs are max skilled, and I'm still losing like I haven't finished Elite yet, I'm giving it about 3 more days before I uninstall.

I do not fully get your math there :)

However I also have to say as a newbie friendly unit, we have loads of trainees that are new to the game or Tier 5 casuals, that want to "casually improve". After a few training sessions and a bit of advice on builds and skills, they all do at least 30-50% better with the new system than with the old.
In the old system they had hardly any mechs mastered, as casuals tend to not invest that heavy and did not have 3 chassis to master. Now they can easily master a mech in a few days, even with casual play without the need to have 2 more variants of that mech and it is even more cost effective for them.
So even for CW/FP they get much quicker to a fully skilled dropdeck or even two.

Skill tree is trash, your out of your mind if you believe otherwise. it has made very fun non meta mechs that i loved unplayable.

I guess then you are doing it wrong :) Even the Dragon is pretty sweet now and it used to suck big time.

Weak Mechs are good again but mainly because of the general nerf that you get with the skill tree. Just think of it DRG-5N has the following quirks UAC Jam chance of 40%, Ballistic cooldown of 10% UAC cooldown of 10% ballistic range, ballistic velocity and energy cooldown and energy duration of 15%

The best you can get fully skilling up your mech in the weapons tree is 5% jam chance, 12% cooldown, 10% velocity and yes you get range and heat gen at 5% and 6% but the cost is 41 SPs so basically you take an unskilled mech against that and you are now looking at a big difference. i believe the Orions have also been buffed to an extreme it has nothing really to do with the skill tree per se but everything to do with the quirks

You are right about the quirks of the 5N, but it sucked before anyways. The real reason it shines now is with skills you can armor and structure quirk it and be on to something...
