In terms of sheer gameplay, MechWarrior Online is a lot like World of Tanks whereas MechWarrior: Living Legends is closer to War Thunder/Battlefield's multiplayer at least with the combined-arms aspect.

In a weird way, historic war games are pretty much prequels to Battletech anyway.

MWO doesn't have the armor deflection-penetration mechanics that World of Tanks, War Thunder and Armored Warfare has.

This is what separates a tank game from a mech game.

I was trying to think which games have this twist to spread damage on armor mechanics, then it hits me. Yes there are such games but not mechs.

Star Trek and Starfleet games. Except of armor, you have your shields.

If I remember, both Dreadnought and Fractured Space also have spread and distribute damage mechanics.

I have discovered a way to play MW4 Mercs on a VPN (lan party) with all of mekteks added maps and mechs took bout 1/2 hr to D/L and set it up and including watching video on how to do it. and I had NO mw4 loaded to start... its all in a zip file everything you need except the VPN (hamachi) which is a piece of cake.. been playing every night now for about a week ssssooooooo much fun soooo old school. Only drawback, is the VPN is designed for only 5 players at a time, My friend (TIMBERWOLF) and me (FEAR THIS) both old MWL players are having an old fashioned ball. just contacted Smokin Joe from our MWL days and he's going to D/l this weekend and play with us too... just sayin there are ways to play MW4 Mercs just like it was set up its its hay day, albeit not as may players on a team, but you can add bots too, just like in the old days...regards... War Robots is currently deep in the RDB plague.

What is the RDB?

Its called the Russian Death Button, a configuration thought up and popularized by Russian players.

I myself is pretty set up to play this style across all my robots.

You could try MechWarrior 3, MechWarrior 4, or MechWarrior Living Legends. All have online play.
