OK, after laughing quietly to the splash window that pops up when trying to launch MWO, the one that is prompting folk to load up the new portal; the comment about trying it out now in case of any kind of problem kind of stood out.

Anyway, my son followed the link, downloaded the portal and has ended up with some kind of befouled blue/black looking portal that throws out his in game resolution, kicking it back to 1280x720, disabling his mouse if trying to go out of the central part of the screen and generally making it a 15 minute job to reset everything back to a playable state again (nope, screen is locked to the top left hand side and he can't scroll it down to the MWO Options button). So, a great start to the bug free new portal.

Then I try to simulate the same issue on my PC and after trying to run the new portal download, system hangs then eventually picks itself back up again only to tell me I have the new portal already installed?! Always run from the original portal, never had anything to do with Steam.

The laughing has kind of dried up, two separate PCs with separate installation links giving completely different errors - now I see why the little caveat is in place about the remote chance of problems in the splash screen - "remote" meaning any PC other than those in PGI's Office?

Out of interest, has anyone had these kind of issues and if so, how did you sort them out please? Last time I tried to use PGI's Customer Service, it took 4 weeks for them to reply and then told there wasn't a problem - huh? - and why didn't I reply to their earlier response which was never received (probably sent).
