I am a tier 3 pilot. I'm not the best, but I know some things.

I am soooooo fed up with the differing skill levels in PUG games. It seems that the games are almost never tight, almost always overwhelming victories or defeats. Spectating some people is excruciating watching!

So, could it be fixed by having 5 queues? One for each tier? Surely that would even out the skill levels and make games closer?

Vote on what you think!

Ummm.... Match Maker already does try to match people based on tiers. The longer the match is in search (unable to find players that match the parameters of said search), the more it widens it's search.

It's rather complicated to say quickly, but basically it selects a "seed" player, the first one "in the match". From there, it will search for players closest to their PSR level. The longer the seed player waits, the wider it's search becomes.

So, if you are being teamed up and against players who are not of your tier than it took a while for your match's seed player to find players to play with/against.

I'll also mention... There is no MM in FP. So if you are not in a QP queue, than don't expect that even fight. FP is considered hard mode and "end game content". It's for those wishing to try and seek out more of a challenge or work with more teamwork.

I understand that the quick play queue is "trying" to do something to match pilot skill ratings, my point is that the algo doesn't seem to be doing a good job on this aspect.

This makes sense from PGIs perspective, because of course, the algo is doing many things. The overall performance of the algo is going to many factors into account, most notably matchmaking time to search.

Having worked on many algos in commercial settings, I can totally understand that. Its a compromise.

However, the inconsistent skill matches I experience are so frustrating it puts me right off the entire game.

So, perhaps what we need is a tweak. Maybe we could create two quick queues. Tier 3 pilots and above, and everyone. The player could then toggle which queue they want to be in.

I would be happy to wait an extra minute or so, in order not to waste time getting match I don't want.

You are talking to people who complained (as a general group, not specific individuals) about waiting 30 seconds for a match to start. So now, instead of waiting 30 seconds after everyone has connected to the match to do pre-match discussions or whatever, it now switches the timer to 10 seconds once everyone has connected. The same group who also complain that it "takes too many clicks and too long" to log into and out of the game... As though their fingers are broken or like playing the game somehow uses far fewer clicks...

Also, the same group of players who complained (and rightly so here) that it took 5+ minutes to find a match in QP solo match searches sometimes, back when it took longer or it didn't open up the search the longer you waited (this is back in the Elo days).

You and I may be more patent, but not everyone seems to be as patent as we are. So, I don't believe your suggestion would work to be honest. Either you'd have people complain about it (even if it's voluntary), or it might separate the people able to match that it may slow down everyone's match searching times (which would lead to more complaints again).

It's a delicate balance between trying to create a fair match, and how long people should wait for said match to be created.

(As a side note: Not everyone is actually at the tier that represents their actual skills. The PSR system can sometimes run more as an experience bar than an actual skill indicator. It's typically easier to gain PSR than it is to lose it...)
