First off, sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. I was sure that there was a dedicated forum for older Mechwarrior games, but I can't seem to find it now.
I got Mechwarrior 3 working with dgvoodoo2 and I am going through the campaign but I can't remember how salvage works in that title and I am not finding much on my own. I know that if you headshot enemy mechs that the pilot will eject leaving a undamaged mech you can salvage after the mission. Does anyone know if there is another way to make salvaging a mech likely?

Salvage doesn't change much in MW3 except that you might get the mech in salvage if you don't destroy too much of it. No guarantee though, some chance involved. Missiles tend to do the most destruction of sections, auto-cannons the least.
BTW if you have an Nvidia card you can run MW3 by turning on vertical sync and turning off AA. I do it all the time. Doesn't seem to work with ATI cards though.
Also, if you make a mech in Instant Action with lots of ammo, it appears in the Campaign with all the ammo. You have to have acquired some of the ammo in the Campaign first though.

wow.. such CHEESE!
mech warrior 3 had some glarring exploits and this was one of um. Glad they fixed it in mech 4.
But OP: if you want to ruin your game, or have fun depending on which view you take, load up a shadow cat with 16 SL's and leg everything. Outside of being the only mech you need to play the entire campaign, you will end up with loads of salvage and fights will last about 10 seconds... But how cares about balance its Single player!

Yea i did that once..
